Reports of a large object being seen floating in the vicinity of Sandown Pier prompted a Coastguard investigation this evening (Monday).
HM Coastguard received a report from a concerned member of the public after they spotted a large black object drifting in the water.
Bembridge Coastguard Rescue Team was quickly tasked to investigate the object and ascertain whether it was someone in need of assistance or something that could be a hazard to those in the area.
A brief investigation led Costguard Rescue Officers to the object which was soon found to be an item of building material which had come loose from the pier itself.
The large diameter plastic tube was recovered to shore and secured with the team standing down shortly afterwards.
If you or someone else is in difficulty on the coast or at sea, or if you spot what you think may be unexploded ordnance, then dial 999 and ask for the Coastguard. Further safety information can be found at https://coastguardsafety.campaign.gov.uk/.
