A Cowes man who drove home drunk, despite living just a short distance away, has been handed an 18-month driving ban at the Isle of Wight Magistrates Court.
Ross Mabey, 33, of Woodvale Road in Cowes, pleaded guilty to drink driving when he appeared in front of Magistrates on Tuesday.
Ann Smout, prosecuting, told the court that on the evening of 9th August, Police received a report from someone about a man staggering whilst walking towards a car.
Police soon found Mabey outside of his car – a Mazda MX-5 – staggering once again with the keys in his hand. Officers noticed that the engine was on and the bonnet of the car was hot.
Mabey was taken to Newport Police Station and was asked to give a blood sample. A sample was successfully taken which later returned a reading of 160 millilitres in blood, double the legal limit of 80.
In an interview with Police, Mabey admitted that he did drive his car and that he thought it was a short drive to his home.
Defending, Barry Arnett said that his client made a very stupid decision that day and that Mabey could’ve walked the 30-minute journey home. He also said that Mabey was fully cooperative with Police and that he was very sorry and upset with himself.
Magistrates handed the 33-year-old chef an 18-month driving ban. He was also ordered to pay a £405 fine, costs of £85 and a surcharge of £162.

Why does it matter that he is a Chef?
Why mention it? Would you write ‘Journalist’ if he worked for Island Echo?!
One word. Good. Next time walk.
I don’t like this court it’s unfair why this man paid this heavy fine when he did not hurt anyone. Yet other cases that are worse then this only pay half that amount. Micky mouse court
