As part of government reforms to centralise fraud investigations under a single UK-wide service, anyone who thinks they may know someone who is conducting benefit fraud should no longer call the council but instead ring a different number.
The government has set up the Single Fraud Investigation Service (SFIS) which now leads on all investigations into alleged benefit fraud. If you have suspicions someone is committing benefit fraud, you should ring the National Benefit Fraud helpline on 0800 854 440. Alternatively, you can report it online at www.gov.uk/report-benefit-fraud.
On the Island during the 2014/15 financial year, more than £425,000 worth of housing benefit was fraudulently claimed. This money is currently being paid back.
Executive member responsible for resources, Councillor Jonathan Bacon, said:
“Benefit fraud is a serious crime and investigators work round the clock to crackdown on criminals and ensure they face the consequences of their actions.
“The new SFIS makes it easier for people to report suspected fraud which plays a key part in stamping out this illegal activity.”
All existing benefit fraud investigators have transferred to the SFIS and remain based on the Island.
Until recently, residents had contacted the council directly and anyone speaking to the council to report benefit fraud will be advised of the new arrangements.
