It was a challenging day for the crews of Newport Rowing Club at Woolston Regatta in Southampton last Saturday.
It was a breezy afternoon, with some decent waves.
The Men’s Novice A crew or Boris Hare, Jake Garner, Connor Garner, Harry Hare – coxed by Marianna Hare – were leading round the turn but were caught by a wave on the build-out, which turned them over. Amazingly, they were able to right the boat, get back in, and finish the race.
The B crew of Will Loveday-Powell, Chris Clarke, Hayden Tiffin and Artur Rozvodovski – coxed by Emily Faithfull – had a less eventful race, and finished 6th from 9 starters, beating season rivals from Poole RC.
The Women’s Masters crew of Julia Wilks, Julia Coulson, Julie Clarke, and Stella Gamble (from Shanklin Sandown Rowing Club) – coxed by Marianna Hare – were dealing with the conditions but going into the buoy turn collided with a crew coming out of their turn, which damaged their boat. They couldn’t continue the race.
