The shocking scale of the Island’s mental health crisis among young people has been revealed in a survey conducted by the Isle of Wight Youth Trust, with 134 of 1,223 young Islanders surveyed stating they’ve tried to take their own life. Findings from the biennial survey conducted by the trust show that many indicators of wellbeing have not recovered to their pre-pandemic levels with the number of young people experiencing episodes of anger showing a notable increase since the last study in 2021. Of 1,223 young Islanders – aged between 11 and 25 – questioned by the mental health charity earlier this year, 30% admitted to deliberately harming themselves, 34% had considered suicide and 11% attempted to take their own life. Jo Dare, CEO of the Isle of Wight Youth Trust, said:
“With these shocking statistics it is no surprise that the Island has the highest rates of under-18 mental health and self-harm related hospital admissions in the South East and one of the highest rates in the country. “This needs to change and our charity is working hard to put in place additional support to help those in need.”
The findings come as national statistics from the NHS show that in 2020, 1 in 6 children aged 5-16 were identified as having a probable mental health condition – approximately 5 children in every classroom – rates that have doubled since 2017. This statistic also increased with age and with a noticeable difference in gender for the older age group (17-22 year olds) with 1 in 4 young women identified as having a probable mental health disorder. Children and young people are facing significant challenges in their lives – with social media, global events, the lasting effects of the pandemic and the current economic crisis all contributing to anxiety levels and a decline in mental health. Of those young people who sought help from the IW Youth Trust, 77% had reported worrying a lot and 71% had experienced anger and regularly lost their temper. The survey also highlighted bullying as a significant problem, with more than half of respondents experiencing abuse. While in-person bullying was most prevalent – whether that be verbal, emotional or physical – half of all survey respondents also reported that they had been sent threatening intimidating or nasty messages via social media, email or text. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WwMYG5skG9M Jo said:
“Our census reveals that life can be hard for our young people, but we strongly believe that getting support shouldn’t be. “Our charity accepts referrals for support for children and young people aged from five up to 25. We assess each person’s individual needs and decide on the most appropriate form of support. For some young people this can include one-to-one counselling, but for many others we find holding small group sessions of between 3-6 young people more beneficial, providing opportunities for young people to talk to those going through similar problems. “Such is the demand for help at the moment, we have introduced additional wellbeing sessions so that young people can begin to access the support they need and we would urge any young person to get in touch with us so we can help.”

The survey was sent to all Isle of Wight schools and promoted via youth groups and social media.

We are reading this wrong. It is because life is so easy compared to past generations where many did live in real poverty, did have real worries, especially in War times
Now everyone no matter how useless your parents are fed and have a home.
All get free education and health care.
The only negative is we have and are allowing in a lot of people who see women as objects to abuse and are primitive in using knives against our young encouraging them to follow.
I’m pretty sure it’s also raised awareness. War has 100% produced a lot of messed up people, PTSDs, depressions and suicides – it’s just that nobody cares about them and you only got to heard about those who survived their mental crisis and prospered. Literally survivorship bias.
*cared about them (as in back then)
Look into studies of veterans from Middle East or Ukraine. So many mental issues. 100 years ago people weren’t different, they had same brains. They suffered all of those things, it’s just that only a few cared.
so a charity focused on mental health says there is a problem – nothing like talking your own book, to justify your existence and hopefully get more money to pay your salaries.
also – perhaps if the children weren’t such a bunch of self entitled babies, that have been through a school system run by woke lefties, that don’t teach the hard reality of life, then it comes as no surprise that they aren’t equipped to deal with the world.
this for example…with the number of young people experiencing episodes of anger showing a notable increase since the last study in 2021
what a load of drivel – everyone gets angry – it is a fact of life – get used to it.
The thing is nowadays we are aware that plenty of those anger issues are caused by other mental issues which can be treated if attention is paid to them, which is much better than blindly accepting that people get angry and that’s it, we will deal with them after their anger manifests in the real world with dangerous driving, wife beating or other news highlights.
Also, it’s not a job of a school to teach you hard reality of life, lol.
yes it is, that is what the social and life skills lessons at school were all about.
school is about preparing you for adult life
Or at least it should be.
Here, have a participation medal for turning up today, ffs.
You can be anything you want to be, gender fluid space person etc, what? Stuck on the Pyle of shyte with no opportunity, and everyone hating the mainland, see that nipper, pointing across 1.5 miles of over priced water, shiver me timbers, there be dragons!!
Nope.Just used to indoctrinate toxic marxist brainwashing trash while simultaneously operating as threshing barns, seperating wheat from chaff for a lifetime on the tax-plantation while ‘teaching’ absolutely nothing of any real value for a balanced life.
This “Woe is Me Generation” is good for nothing. Just bad parenting and awful schooling to blame. Spoiled, indulged, and brainwashed by Youtube morons.
I think you have to take surveys like this with a very large pinch of salt.
Just from the graphic above, can we really believe that 1 in 3 youngsters between the ages of 11-25 have been in consultation with a mental health professional? And, likewise, 1 in 3 have considered suicide and that 10% have actually tried to take their own lives?
Given that we’re talking about the TikTok generation here, it’s really very difficult to believe it. If you actually look on platforms like that, it’s astounding just how naive a lot of young people are, and that they will literally say or write anything that comes into their heads, mostly for effect.
I’m not denying that there are youngsters with problems, but just nowhere near this level.
It’s almost as if locking young people in homes, cancelling any sort of structure they had (schooling/social) telling them that if they dared to have contact with other humans ‘they’d kill granny’ wasn’t such a good idea and has exaggerated poor mental health in people.
who knew!?!
No, children are given too much attention now, and can’t bear being told the truth as they can’t cope with facts since woke has ruled the classroom.
If a child is fat, no one can say so.
If a child is disabled, thick, lazy, awkward, half caste, queer, odd religious persuasion etc no one dare mention it.
All now have to skirt around the oddities and in many cases praise or give extra attention to these shortcomings, thus giving them an unrealistic and untruthful perception of what most, if they were honest , truly feel.
As always one extreme to the other
Good grief.
Im not even going to debate this comment.
Ill just leave here knowing that this level of vileness towards the disabled, less academic, children of colour, different religion ‘oddities’ etc, is still live and kicking.
these are CHILDREN you are talking about!
It’s no wonder the young people on the Island have so many mental health problems living in a place bursting at the seams with vicious, judgemental, self-righteous old grunters as evidenced by the comments here.
Welcome to life. It can be tough but you’ll learn to live with it.
Anger is the entitled runt having boundaries put in place and them chucking their toys out the pram having never been taught right from wrong.
Most children on the island have weak role models who are either on the sick, never worked or who push out their litter without having the means to independently support them thus questioning why they were even brought into the world.
What is there really to look forward to, we have a decimated country and an environmental tsunami both of which will rape any quality of life one was hoping for.
Some truly ignorant and narrow minded comments on here as usual.
