UPDATED: Police have cordoned off a cemetery in Cowes this morning (Saturday) following the discovery of a body.
Members of the public found the deceased individual within the grounds of Northwood Cemetery on Newport Road shortly before 08:00.
The Isle of Wight Ambulance Service and Hampshire Constabulary responded to the scene immediately, but unfortunately there was nothing they could do to save the person’s life.
Detectives from Newport CID are now in attendance at the cemetery as Police work to establish if there are any suspicious circumstances to the death.
UPDATE @ 10:50 – Hampshire Constabulary have confirmed that they were called to the scene at 07:50.
A spokesperson has said:
“Next of kin have been informed but formal identification procedures are ongoing.
“At this stage the death is not being treated as suspicious and a file is being prepared for the coroner.”
