The main road between Wootton and Binstead is blocked this afternoon (Friday) because of a fallen tree.
The large tree has fallen on Quarr Hill near where the road turns into Elenors Grove and is blocking the entirety of the carriageway.
High winds – which have reached as high as 79mph at The Needles – caused the tree to fall, with it hitting the ground at around 14:00.
Vehicles have been attempting to go around the obstacle but have subsequently churned up the grass to the side of the road.
Southern Vectis route 4 and 9 buses are diverting
Traffic plans are being currently being drawn up, with drivers advised to avoid the area until the tree has been moved.
UPDATE @ 15:20 – Contractors are on site and are working to cut the tree and remove all debris from the road.
No time has been given as to when the road is due to reopen.
UPDATE @ 19:00 – The road has now reopened.

Traffic plans are currently being drawn up? So in other words, island roads doesn’t have a plan b for these sort of things, despite island roads having the contract for years. Superb forward planning by island roads management

I was a tree surgeon for 20 + years should of taken half an hour to clear .if vehicles could get round it I would call it a large bush

it was NOT a large Bush it fell straight in front of our car !!!.if you could clear this in half an hour .. I’d be amazed…..I’d come and.time you.!!!

30 years ago I was put into intensive care when a car going around a fallen tree lost control mounted the pavement and ran me over. It’s is shocking no police to deal with this and that it blocked the road for so long. I guess us peasants are expendable.

Awww leave this person alone. She has a small child and there is never any parking available. What do you expect people to do when they have a baby and armfuls of shopping, for example? Should they then park miles away and try to carry said child, multiple carrier bags, etc.; and what about if it’s raining too? Just deal with it. It only takes a second to wait, then go around.
