You will have guessed… this was an Island Echo’s April Fools Day article for 2025, supplied by Ryde Town Council!
Ryde Town Council has announced a bold, dynamic, slippery strategy to increase tourism in the town out of the usual summer season.
From November to March, Union Street is going to be closed to traffic and transformed into a spectacular Alpine wonderland complete with a 500-metre dry ski slope.
Ryde Town Council Clerk Lisa Dyer says:
“Summer is always so vibrant in Ryde and we wanted to find an innovative way to replicate that in the Winter – what better way than slaloming down the street, racing down the road and tobogganing down the toboulevard?
“Pop some planks on your feet, slap on your salopettes or nick your nan’s neoprene all-in one jumpsuit and come and join the fun.”
To complete the authentic experience, instead of a ski lift, Ryde Town Council are seeking volunteers to offer piggy-backs up to the top of the slope.
A spokesperson for Ryde Town Council adds:
“This is very exciting for the town. We did investigate a ski jump at the bottom of the road but that was deemed a health and safety risk.”

Lol
Happy April fools, would be rather cool though
Ha Ha Ha!
Queue jokes re Ryde going downhill.
That’s what I call taking the piste, it would be
a great idea, much better than watching speeding
motorists and vehicles parking illegally in the Taxi
bay near Spoons.
I am certain the Councils Enforcement Officers turn a
blind eye to many vehicles parking along Union Street
many of the businesses leave their vehicles parked along
Union street for more than an hour.
