A small boat has washed ashore on the beach at Compton after breaking free from its mooring in rough seas earlier this afternoon (Saturday).
At just gone 14:20, Freshwater Independent Lifeboat was tasked to reports of a small motor vessel adrift off the West Wight and heading in the direction of Compton Bay.
When the lifeboat reached the area it became clear that the casualty vessel – which is understood to have drifted along the coast from Poole – had sadly already run aground on the shoreline.
With no persons on board and no immediate danger identified – and also taking into account the weather conditions – the decision was taken to stand the lifeboat down and return to station.
The vessel is now hard aground and taking a battering from the waves.
It’s thought that recovery will be arranged in due course.

Someone is going to be very unhappy losing their little boat
We must be grateful it never drifted to France, for it may have come back with a very costly for us cargo.
Whose claiming salvage ?
Nobody can claim salvage it’s on shore it has to be at sea to be classed as salvage and has to be in none teritorial waters or international waters
Outboard will be gone by the morning.
Gone already. Make me an offer
I think it’s probably smugglers.
I blame the floating bridge
