A motorcyclist who travelled at ‘reckless’ speeds in excess of 115mph, just moments before he smashed into a car, has been handed a 6-month driving ban.
33-year-old Samuel Callaway sustained life-changing injuries as a result of the crash on Military Road back on 7th August last year. But his actions on that day have led to a criminal conviction of driving without due care and attention.
Callaway, of Perowne Way in Sandown, pleaded guilty to the single charge when he appeared at the Isle of Wight Magistrates Court on Tuesday (25th February).
The court heard from the Crown Prosecution Service that Callaway was travelling West on Military Road when he collided with a black Toyota Aygo as the vehicle pulled out from Hanover Point car park at Compton.
Go Pro footage, captured by Callaway himself, revealed that he had topped speeds of 117mph in the minutes leading up to the crash and was travelling at 100mph when he slammed on the brakes and smashed into the Aygo.

The crash threw Callaway from his motorcycle – a Honda CB 750 – and into a ditch. He sustained 24 broken bones and was flown to Southampton’s Major Trauma Centre by the Hampshire & Isle of Wight Air Ambulance.
Leah Dillon, prosecuting, told the bench that it was a miracle more serious injuries were not caused.
Representing himself, Samuel Callaway explained to Magistrates that his actions were entirely reckless and, as a result, he sustained lifelong injuries. He detailed how he had been housebound for the past 7 months and had been hospitalised twice. He can no longer use his right hand fully.
Callaway also said that he believes even if he was going at the speed limit of 60mph he would have still crashed.
He made a point of stating in open court that the driver of the other vehicle allegedly had no insurance or tax on the day of the crash and therefore should not have been on the road.
Magistrates handed Samuel Callaway a 6-month driving ban and fined him £120. He was also ordered to pay £85 costs and a £48 surcharge.
Callaway said he is no longer physically able to ride a motorcycle or drive a car.
At least we now have proof SPEEDING takes place on the
Island.
I have driven along the Military Road many times and
there is never a time a Numpty on a Motorbike doesn’t
ride at excessive speeds.
What has IW Council done to make the Military Road
Safe?! NOTHING
This road is totally lawless, Speed Camera’s and road
humps are desperately required.
Come on IW Council, where is the Road Safety on our
Roads.
What an arse! I had one today with the ”I must be in the front sickness” overtake me and cut up another car on the bridge at Beaper. These are the ones who think WE must think bike. NO sod you, you ride the bike in the proper manner, and i’ll not swerve and risk someone else trying to avoid your halfwit style driving because you are not. Reg NH04 XKE on my dash cam
Even with video evidence and the registration number, I bet the island police do the same as on the mainland, SOD ALL.
What’s the betting that even though the guilty party
caused the accident and must have cost our NHS
thousands if not nearly millions of pounds in costs
due to self inflicted injuries by speeding, he will end up
living on state paid benefits
Makes me sick, that is why I keep going on about
Speeding, someone needs to do something about
Speeding on the island.
I KEEP TELLING YOU, GIVE YOUR FEELINGS ON THIS TO THE COUNCIL, DIRECT.
Moral of this story – if both of them had acted lawfully , neither of them would have been affected.
A videoed stupidity caused permanent injuries to the man on the motorbike.
The driver of the car was not insured or taxed.
So for both of them it was a most undesired outcome.
And for the emergency services , this whole incident could have been avoided if these two individuals had not made stupid decisions that day.
He was going way too fast? But it looks like the uninsured and un taxed car pulled out in front of him, so he probably wouldn’t have been able to stop even if he was going slower?? Is the car driver being prosecuted for having no insurance tax, and dangerous driving??
Silly thing to do that speed near these pull out points always slow right down near them. What about the uninsured Driver??should not be on road driver?/are they getting prosecuted??
Also no indicators from the car it seems..but he was stupid to go fast by parked cars and the pullout.
Even if the the car driver didn’t have insurance etc, the bike was still speeding, no sympathy from me. Typical along that road, see it all the bloody time, pulling wheelies, speeding weaving in and out of cars, wreckless beyond belief.
Oh well choices & consequences it was only a matter of time before this happened, at least because of his stupidity he didn’t actually kill somebody.
At the speed the bike was going means it was covering nearly 300 yards in 5 seconds.
Any driver emerging from that difficult exit would have no chance of understanding in an instant just how fast the bike was hurtling towards them.
It makes me shudder to see how fast he was going past the (illegally) parked cars when the chances are any of them could be opening their doors unexpectedly.
I suppose although he was negligent he will now be entitled to various benefits etc.
Motorcyclists have your headlamp on when riding. It is a lifesaver.
There was a t.v ad’ back in the 60’s encouraging motorcyclists to have a light on during the day. For the next few decades most did & it saved lives,
Remember the profile of an unlit motorcyclist is not much wider than your helmet !
I was driving along the Military Road this evening
doing 50mph and a motorbike went flying by at I would
estimate 90mph+
Even though such an accident happened, majority of
Motorcyclists are uneducated selfish B’stards
who think they have 9 lives (only pussies have 9 lives)
It is high time plod patrolled the Military Road.
Majority of Motorcyclist Numpty’s meet up in the
Car park nr Blackgang then go on a speeding mission.
“I was driving along the Military Road this evening
doing 50mph”
You were doing what !!!!!
50!!!
what ever happend to your persistant, repetative. (boring) claim that 20 is plenty, & that ALL island roads should have 20mph speed limits, with speed cameras and speed humps to enforce it…
& there you are, blatently admitting to breaking your own self-proclaimed 20mph speed limit!!
I think you have just proved, by example, that 20 is not plenty!
p.s. “only pussies have 9 lives”,.. erm,.. I think you’ll find that’s cats. LOL
Nice one.
What plod??
