HM Coastguard was called to investigate reports of possible pollution on Ryde Beach this morning (Tuesday).
Bembridge Coastguard Rescue Team was tasked by Solent Coastguard at 10:00 to investigation reports of palm oil washing up on Ryde’s coastline.
1 dog owner was warning members of the public yesterday after their Dachshund had to be taken to the Vets with suspected pancreatitis caused by palm oil.
A spokesperson for Bembridge Coastguard Rescue Team has said:
“Once on scene teams investigated for the pollution between Ryde and Seaview with nothing found.
“The substance can be extremely dangerous to animals.
“Only a few months ago, a large amount of palm oil was found washed up on Yaverland Beach.
“If any members of the public find themselves coming across palm oil on the coastlines we advise this to be reported to the Coastguard as soon as possible.”

What is Palm Oil?
Palm oil is an edible vegetable oil derived from the pulp of the fruit of African, American and Maripa palms.
It is used in processed foods, toiletries and as a biofuel.
Large ships also use palm oil as a tank cleaning agent.
Is palm oil safe for dogs?
While palm oil is not poisonous to dogs, it does have a laxative effect and, if eaten, can cause sickness, diarrhoea, dehydration and, in extreme cases, pancreatitis.
It can also cause blockages in the gut due to its semi-solid state.
Some dogs have become seriously ill after ingesting palm oil.
Much of the risk from palm oil is thought to derive from other toxic products mixed in it such a diesel oil from ships.
