Dog owners and walkers have taken to social media this morning (Monday) to warn islanders of palm oil that have been seen washing up onto beaches around Ryde.
One dog owner has said their Dachshund is currently at the vets on a drip with suspected pancreatitis from the palm oil.
The owner goes on to warn other dog owners to be careful and vigilant as what your pet is up to especially around Ryde beaches.
What is Palm Oil?
Palm oil is an edible vegetable oil derived from the pulp of the fruit of African, American and Maripa palms.
It is used in processed foods, toiletries and as a biofuel.
Large ships also use palm oil as a tank cleaning agent.
Is palm oil safe for dogs?
While palm oil is not poisonous to dogs, it does have a laxative effect and, if eaten, can cause sickness, diarrhoea, dehydration and, in extreme cases, pancreatitis.
It can also cause blockages in the gut due to its semi-solid state.
Some dogs have become seriously ill after ingesting palm oil.
Much of the risk from palm oil is thought to derive from other toxic products mixed in it such a diesel oil from ships.

Last November some washed up on Sandown beach, now it’s on Ryde beach. Horrible stuff.

Perhaps we should get the vandals who broke the RNLI window, and the vandals at Ventnor to pick this up, whilst wearing a ball and chain so they cannot run away.
They would never do it again…………much.
Anyway the Police can’t be bothered to catch such, all they say in such cases is claim on your insurance, give you a crime ref, no. and ask if you want ‘victim support’.
It will all get worse as each generation breeds from puberty upwards.
Our Labrador has mysteriously had diarrhoea over the last two nights. We walked on the beach from Appley to Seagrove.
Are neighbours daughter in law, Julie’s dog had a terrible night. Her husband Barry went down to make his flask, and the front room where Jasper sleeps smelt something awful. The poor little dog a Westie was shaking in his little bed, and there was brown liquid all over the carpet, and up the wall. Must have jetted out with force Barry said, they had taken him to the beach at Apley too as his fur gets all muddy in the country.
Best not go to the beach I say, rather mud to clean up that the other.
