Asda will not be opening its Newport store on Boxing Day this year, it has been announced.
In a throwback to days gone by when stores would remain closed for an extended period of Christmas, bosses have confirmed the move which is ‘unique’ to 2020. Home Bargains and Waitrose will also be closed on 26th December.
In a letter to staff, the company has explained how it wants to ensure that as many colleagues as possible can spend time with loved ones over the festive period as the government relaxes the coronavirus restrictions.
In order to give staff members an extended break, all Asda stores across the country will remain closed on Christmas Day and Boxing Day.
As an extra benefit, staff will receive a Christmas bonus in their February pay packet.
Asda Newport will close at 19:00 on Christmas Eve (Thursday 24th December) and will re-open as normal on Sunday 27th December.

bone idle layabouts, enforcing the xmas holiday on all staff – what about those who do not celebrate christmas and object to being forced to sit at home doing nothing.
Who said you had to sit at home all day? Go for a bloodly walk and don’t be such a baby! ?
these types of business are key to the communities throughout the country and should be open 7 days a week, 365 days a year, with strategic staffing to ensure that those who want xmas off get it and those that despise the pitiful excuse for a over feeding/drinking session can work as normal.
selfish ingrates expect the rest of us to put up with gimps running around with stupid grins on their faces, dressed up like something out of a nightmare, telling you to have a great xmas.
Bah humbug. You miserable git. Why don’t you offer your services then or do some volunteering. Why should the staff not spend time with loved ones and enjoy themselves.
smithy – you miss the point – why should i volunteer on that or any other day, why should this christian festival be imposed on all of us. Some expect the day to be normal. why should everyone elses enjoyment be at my expense.
these shops can easily be open and staffed by people who loathe christmas – thus all will be happy and catered for.
That was my point. You hate Christmas so volunteer your services to open the shops!
No you miss the point smithy – just because others have chosen to celebrate a christian festival, shouldn’t mean that my way of life is affected and I should not have this festival rammed in my face everywhere i go.
by doing anything different on december 25th than I would do on any other day, means that the christian imposed festival is affecting my way of life – unacceptable.
You are so naughty, sir, but they’re still not twigging… So, fair enough, you almost had me going after my gin and Dubonnet(s)! Regards, Lady Dunstanding.
I can’t understand the negative reaction. You are really very funny! Bravo, sir.
Hardly an extended break, with the amount of food that gets bought on the run-up to Christmas they could stay shut for a week without causing to many problems.
Well done ASDA. Give the staff a break. Although I would prefer people to be allowed to take their holiday when they like. Not enforcing the Christmas brake on all of us. This is welcome. The over consumption shopping frenzy around Christmas time is repugnant. If I were a christian I would be offended that my religious festival has been hijacked to drive sales. The season of greed and gluttony.
Good … staff deserve a break.
Shops never used to open for several days back in the 70s .. it didn’t do anyone harm to go without shops for a while – folk got used to buying stuff well in time for a nice long break.
Exactly! Shops didn’t open on Sundays and had 1/2 day closing one day a week. None of us starved!!
I think Lidl and Morrison’s may also be closed according to their website opening hours. Well done and about time too. Imagine enjoying Christmas Day knowing you have to get back to work the next day let people have a break especially after the year we’ve all had.
Yep spot on … I hope this is the case for all shops and staff can have a lovely time without work thoughts.
why should those of us who do not support xmas, be expected to endure the shops being closed, when they are key to the community – where is the equality in this – I expect to be able to go food shopping on any day of the year.
why has island echo seen fit to censor posts, that do not agree with this selfish idea of asda’s
If you cannot manage without a shop for two days then there is something wrong with you.
if you think shops are the key to the community, you really need to get out more.
supermarkets are souless pits that are destroying communities
get your food from where then JD?
No food shops, means no people living there as there will be no food available, ergo no community. In other words food shops are key to the community – keep up JD
