UPDATED: A joint investigation into the cause of a property fire which broke out in Shanklin during the early hours is continuing this morning (Tuesday).
Officers from both Hampshire Constabulary and the Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service are examining the scene of the blaze on Avenue Road and are working to establish if arson played a part in the incident.
A specialist dog unit from Surrey Fire and Rescue Service has been drafted in to assist detectives and fire officers in the investigation.
Scenes of crime have already removed 2 petrol cans from the rear of the building, which backs on to a public car park.
As first reported by Island Echo 4 appliances, an aerial ladder platform and the Incident Command Unit were mobilised to the scene in the heart of Shanklin at around 00:15 when a fire broke out on the first floor of the detached property.
It is said the building, which is separated into 2 flats, has sustained 20% fire damage and 100% smoke damage on the first floor.
1 male was treated for smoke inhalation by the Isle of Wight Ambulance Service.
A neighbour has told Island Echo that they heard ‘commotion’ at around 23:55 last night. Then, around 10 minutes later, the building was alight. It is thought the fire centred around the staircase.
Hampshire Constabulary are yet to issue a statement on the matter.
UPDATE WEDNESDAY @ 09:50 – Although Hampshire Constabulary are yet to issue a statement on the investigation, they have appealed for anyone who saw anything suspicious to get in touch.
