A motorist who unknowingly collided with a pedestrian as they crossed the entrance to the Sainsbury’s petrol station in Newport has been handed 5 points on their licence after admitting to driving without due care and attention.
Peter Gardner, 64, of Cherrywood View in Arreton appeared at the Isle of Wight Magistrates Court last Tuesday (19th September).
The court heard that Gardner was driving into the forecourt on 12th January this year, at just gone 06:30 in the morning, when the collision occurred.
Lauren Stone, prosecuting, said that after hitting the pedestrian, Gardner carried on into the petrol station to fill his car up. It’s said he was surprised to learn that he had hit someone and only accepted it after viewing the CCTV footage.
Defending himself, Gardner said that it was pitch black at the time of the incident and that he did not see the pedestrian.
Gardner – who previously had a clean licence – was handed 5 points and a £230 fine. He was also ordered to pay costs of £85 and a £92 surcharge.

“Gardner said that it was pitch black”
Petrol stations are lit up like Christmas trees. Not got his lights on? Seems like could not accept he was in the wrong. Blaming everyone else and not taking responsibility for his actions only fessing up when he ran out of excuses. He knew he did it. Just did not care.
If you’re in the way, expect to get hit. Don’t expect me to feel sorry for you.
