A 26-year-old man from Newport has been arrested on suspicion of stealing a car which was then found near the cliff edge at Compton yesterday afternoon (Sunday).
Police, fire and Coastguard teams responded to the scene at just before 16:00 after concerns were raised for the welfare of a man.
As first reported by Island Echo, emergency services arrived on scene to find a white Ford Mondeo located in a field off Military Road. The incident occurred between the Compton Beach car park and Compton Farm car park, near to the brow of the hill.
Dramatic photos show that the car was teetering on the edge of a section of landslip, just metres away from going over the cliff top. Photos also reveal the Mondeo had a space saver wheel fitted.
Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary has now confirmed that a male from Newport has been arrested on suspicion of theft of a motor vehicle. He remains in custody at this time.
It follows enquiries by Police who were searching the Freshwater area after the discovery of the Mondeo, asking members of the public if they had seen a male.

What we do know is he coose to steal a car many of us are struggling at the moment but we are not stealing cars,driving dangerously, drug driving getting g drunk and smashing windows. WHY BECAUSE most folk who live here are hard working kind decent folks.

Little wheel, Little brain, and the car was stolen trying to drive over to France…
You are not to drive and do shopping ,go on afternoon drive to scenic spots. They are legal to get you to home, garage,tyre shop or just off motorway. Also the wheel is smaller, less tyre on road (grass) so more likely to go out of control – like Jaguar did a few days back – add a drugged up driver and anything happens.
Best place for a ford.
