A car left perching on a verge, close to the cliff edge, has prompted a large emergency response to a West Wight beauty spot this afternoon (Sunday).
A white Ford Mondeo has come to a stop just feet from the edge of the cliff at Compton after bottoming out on a landslide, having rolled down hill across grassland.
The incident has occurred between the Compton Beach car park and Compton Farm car park, near to the brow of the hill.
The family car has been left balancing precariously on the uneven landscape rendering it immobile without help from recovery agents.
Officers from Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary were called to the scene just off Military Road shortly before 16:00.
Firefighters from Hampshire & Isle of Wight Fire and Service are also at the scene alongside Coastguard Rescue Teams from the Needles and Ventnor.
The road remains open under give and take, but the large number of emergency vehicles at the side of the road on a bend means that those wishing to pass will have to do so with care.
UPDATE @ 16:55 – It has been confirmed that nobody is inside the vehicle, however, it was initially feared the occupants were still inside, resulting in the large emergency response pictured.
Photographs captured by Island Echo reveal the Mondeo has a space saver wheel fitted.
Both Coastguard Rescue Teams and a fire appliance from Freshwater have now stood down from the incident.
Fire crews from Newport were stood down prior to arriving on the scene after it was established that nobody was at risk, nor did anyone need rescuing.
A single police unit remains on the scene with the stricken vehicle.
A spokesperson for Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary has said they are not in a position to elaborate on the circumstances of the incident, however, they’ve said the solo person within the car has escaped unharmed.
They’ve also confirmed that there was nobody else in the Mondeo at the time of their arrival.

Once had one myself, those Ford handbrakes can be a bit temperamental!
You can’t park there mate
Shure i saw a parking ticket on the side window. Joking apart hope the driver is ok.
They should be made to pay for the coastguard for turning out to there stupidity
1) it’s a ford and probably has electronic hand brake that often fail.
2) They were not in it
3) They didn’t call Coast Guard
4) Why was any emergency service called, not a danger or anyone hurt.
5) Just needs a tractor to pull it back ready for recovery.
This is problem with IOW either no service turns up or they go over the top with everything, that then are driving at speed and blues and two’s then putting selves and others at risk. Most should of been stood down on route by first responder on scene.
The emergency services view every case the same regardless of what you may class of stupidity, accidents do happen
You are so right Freddie.
The cost, the risk of a further accident with so many vehicles responding.
Best wait for the full story before making assumptions
Why would you say that ,so when a child gets stuck in a tree the parents get charged ,or when you go to A&E you get charged ,what planet are you living on ,
My son in law helped the driver out and took him to freshwater..he wasn’t wasting anyone’s time. ☹️
You just about sum up the worst aspects of your type of poster, David. You have scant information about the situation or circumstances and what little there was you got wrong, and then called the action of the driver ‘stupidity’. Sad.
Can’t park there.. best keep it to the road. Oh you was not in it?
It’s just a joke chill out
Bloody hell ! What is wrong with people !
Deary me
Accidents happen must be such a great life you live at home under youre parents stairs eating pot noodles and talking to you’re so so many friends sad sad sad
Shut up u fag
A flying ford . At least it didn’t end up on its roof
Well it’s on it’s wheels and not on it’s roof like most
I think that cars landing on their roofs is now part of the driving test and applies specifically to the Isle of Wight!
Hay jack why don’t you knock on there door and tell them that , so so brave behind a computer
The space saver wheel is the problem, it’s too small and not touching the ground!
Spacer saver tyres should only be used for emergency travel not visiting scenic places of interest.
Even if the occupants weren’t in the car they were clearly moronic for using the spacer for their non urgent journey – i suspect the vehicle would have featured in the IE one way or another given the behaviour of said owners!
It looks ‘comical’ but I think you would have to deliberately drive a car to that location, the road above it is in a cutting. Hope those concerned are getting appropriate help.
My mobility scooter got stuck on the prow of the old floating bridge like that once, I was late for my darts match at the Vic Tavern
Was it a landslide or did it drive into it? On a space saver tyre by the look of it too!!! Why don’t people get their tyres replaced immediately???
Why on earth were the police sent? They are utterly useless.
Hang on lads I think I’ve got an idea.
Probably all hanging around waiting to see if it falls because they were taking bets.
Just be grateful no one was seriously hurt accidents happen
