A 31-year-old man has been arrested after a male was seen brandishing a knife in the street in Sandown during the early hours of this morning (Friday).
Officers were called to Station Avenue in the seaside town at just before 04:00 after members of the public called 999 to report that they had seen a male waving a knife around in a public place.
It didn’t take long for Police to locate the male in question, with an arrest made.
The 31-year-old remains in custody at Newport Police Station on suspicion of possession of an offensive weapon.
It has been confirmed that no one was injured in the incident.

These people need taking out of society permanently. Courts should have the power to allow the jury to allocate points to all crimes with guidelines

Juries decide on guilt, Judges hand out sentences, so it would be the Judge deciding on the “points”.
There’s also the little fact that Magistrate’s courts don’t have juries.
The United States have a similar system with their “three strikes” laws. The fact that the US locks up more citizens than any other country, yet has rates of violent crime 5 times ours, suggest that isn’t all that effective.
Judges are one person. They can become hardened or biased, or even bribed or threatened.
Far more fair IF the judge instructed the jury on the min and max sentence and the JURY then gave the points depending on the EVIDENCE that they all heard, and being of a mixed society and not all hardened, all biased and all bribed a fair sentence would result.
Most minor cases are dealt with by magistrates which could be left as is, or it would not be difficult to have secure randomly chosen members of the public to do the same online.
The US has a huge mixed population and the US has enough money and space to ‘lock up’ people, we are too poor to afford the jails, but that doesn’t mean we have less per 1000 people who DO really need locking away.
Judges are not locking people up because we have the worlds vile filling up too few jails, not because we are better people here.
