The Apollo Theatre Players will stage the UK premiere of ‘Radical Change’, a new play by Irish writer Brian Walsh, opening at the Apollo Theatre in Newport later this month (23rd May).
Set across decades, the play opens in 1988 and follows Karl – a passionate young man determined to take down the middle classes and challenge social inequality. However, his convictions are soon tested by Elizabeth, whose sharp perspective forces him to reconsider. By the time Karl reaches his 50s, both his status and beliefs have shifted, and he finds himself echoing the very views he once stood against.
Described as fast-moving, comical and poignant, ‘Radical Change’ offers a perceptive look at how people adapt – or fail to adapt – in a changing world.
Brian Walsh, who lives in Donegal, began writing for theatre in his mid-50s and has since won multiple awards.
Brian Walsh has said:
“Radical Change is a play that deals, in part, with the idea that people tend to get more conservative as they age.
“It doesn’t bore down into the subject and ask powerful and profound questions about the concept; it just tells a story in which that concept plays a part. What you think of that concept or why it might happen or what its consequences are, is up to you.”
Gwen Stevens, Director of the production, added:
“The opportunity to direct such an interesting, profound and clever play was just too good to miss – and the privilege of performing a UK/World premiere isn’t one that comes often to local theatre groups.”
Performances of Radical Change will run from 23rd to 31st May at the Apollo Theatre, Newport (no shows on Sunday or Monday).
Tickets can be booked online at www.apollo-theatre.org.uk or by calling the box office on (01983) 210010.
