Aldi has announced it will open 100 new stores across the UK over the next 2 years, with hopes of setting up shop in Ryde and Shanklin.
The supermarket has pledged to invest £1.3billion by 2023 in a bid to further grow its retail estate, as it continues to push ahead with plans to open an average of 1 new store a week.
It’s been confirmed that the discount retailer is looking at sites in Ryde, as well as in Shanklin and Newport. It’s already known that Aldi is set to move into St George’s Retail Park opposite Asda – when the development finally gets underway. Ryde is crying out for more chains, with Tesco dominating the area.
Aldi says it is on the lookout for sites that are big enough to accommodate a 20,000 sqft store and around 100 dedicated parking spaces, preferably on a prominent main road and with good visibility and access.
It was back in 2016 that Island Echo revealed Lidl planned to open a store on land off Brading Road, next to McDonald’s. However, 5 years later and the plans have not developed any further – possibly due to the lack of movement with the Pennyfeathers development. Could the site work for Aldi instead?
Richard Thornton, Communications Director at Aldi UK, said:
“We’re continuing to gain even more customers – with over 60% of UK households shopping with Aldi in the last year.
“Our focus is on expanding our store estate, making sure Aldi is accessible to as many of these new shoppers across the country as possible. Looking ahead, we are excited to provide millions of new customers with access to Aldi’s award-winning quality and unbeatable value as we create even more places and more ways to shop with us.”
Aldi currently has 2 stores on the Isle of Wight located in Cowes and Lake.
ice rink ryde – large enough and large car park surrounding it, prominent main road and good visibilty
We don’t want a supermarket to be the centre of attention and traffic on our seafront, thanks.
against a derelict, dilapidated mess that is currently the centre of attention – priceless treesa, priceless
what would you suggest in its place, as no one else wishes to use this eyesore of a building.
I think it would be better if they got rid of it altogether and instead of a building, created a little wildlife area there and planted some of the much needed trees the country, and especially the Island, needs. It would be like a little haven of peace to escape into if managed correctly, and to find a way to keep the vandals out. As they predominate so much though, I don’t know how. But it would be very welcome to have a little oasis of calm down there. And it would be replacing a very ugly building in the process. Eyesore is right.
And transforming a hideous eyesore in the process.
Totally agree
Oh give over! there’s a store up the road from Shanklin. How much choice do people need?
Where would they find a site that size in Shanklin with that level of parking and as the Lake store is only just along the road..?
The big coop! If the moneys right they will sell the site in a heartbeat. Other than there I cannot for the life of me think where they could put one.
Just what Ryde needs. Another cheap store for all the chavs.
Oh dear, snobbery at its finest…
With so many empty shops in Newport, why not bulldoze most of and build a big shop and car park there?
Good Tesco is poor quality compared and more expensive.
Put one in Ventnor, co-op and tesco are just too expensive there. Why Shanklin, there is a lidl there and an aldi in lake.
A shop for cheapskates.
No, a shop for people who have to be careful with their money and who are fed up with being taken for a ride by the big UK supermarkets. The quality tends to be on a par with, and is often better than, the other big supermarkets too.
NO,NO,NO we do not need Aldi in Shanklin, YES Waitrose, YES, M & S Food, but NO to Aldi or Tescos. Lake already has both so no need for more of the same!
The big CO-OP in Shanklin is lovely please do not replace this with an Aldi or Tescos .
