An agricultural trailer has overturned on Newport’s Stag Lane this afternoon (Friday).
The green trailer, hauling materials destined for a nearby anaerobic digester plant, has overturned on a bend causing extensive damage both to itself and a roadside hedge.
Island Echo has been told by the contractor driving the tractor which was hauling the trailer that the draw-bar snapped, prompting the trailer to come free from the tractor.
It’s thought that the trailers momentum then caused it to career into a roadside kerb and then overturn, spilling its load across the road and into a field parallel to the road.
It is understood that a telehandler from the contractors base farm will assist in the recovery of the trailer.
No injuries have been sustained during the incident.
Good no one was injured! Considering their speed and the load these guys are carrying, I’m not surprised the bar did not cope.
Good job it was on Stagg Lane and not a busy road, These Tractor Trailer combinations are a considerable hazard on our roads, this is at least the third incident this year.
It’s not surprising really. The speeds they drive at are ridiculous for a tractor.
Speeding tractors?
This is the most Isle of Wight comment I’ve ever seen.
lucky no one got injured, or worse.just a matter.of time.given thespeed they go up and down there.
The second time I believe this has happened, previously in Godshill.
How many that this year time they were treated like hgvs
They only know one throttle setting, wide open. Loophole in law allows inexperienced young drivers to drive heavy articulated vehicle’s, they have little if any consideration for the safety of others. Someone will be killed by one of the machines soon. Cheap labour risks lives.
It’s funny how there is no big scrape on the road from a broken drawbar, more like he has rolled it going to fast and that’s what snapped it as the tractor didn’t roll with it.
Fred-exactly what I was thinking
Climate change, going green …. Mmmm how much fuel do these tractors/trailers use each season getting the stuff up to the digester ?
Waste of money full stop.
I was thinking that just the other day following two of them through Arreton and seein a third come down the road from the Hare and hounds. Is what they are carrying grown especially for the digestor or is it waste products from crops? If the former I can’t see how it reduces CO2 as the land it is grown on could be used for crops to feed the country rather than importing the food with all the attendant CO2 importing food produces.
What kind of diesel.
Red…or white
If they spend a certain amount of time on the roads, then they need to be using white diesel(Taxed).
Maybe the tanks need to start being dipped.
We all have to pay tax on our fuel, why not these farmers/ contractors.
Given the speed these guys drive and seeming inability to slow down when traffic coming in opposite direction on narrow roads, I’m surprised this hasn’t happened before.
If you are a farmer you can get away with most of the rules we have to follow I dont think they even pay road tax.
I was driving from Cowes to Newport last week & was shocked how fast he cut in front of me at the Stag, I mentioned it to my sister sitting beside me. So no surprise really more haste less speed.
We followed one (at a distance I might add) the tyres one side were very underinflated….or was it overloaded? This made the trailer lean so much on bends, the stuff he had onboard spilled over the edge of the trailer. Then he decided to speed up and the trailer weaved side to side. They need to sort this out with these bits of kit. Also is it environmentally sound to generate fuel this way?
This digester farce need investigation from high level. No way is it green to pay farmers to grow crops specifically for this machine, and then NOT grow food crops, increasing the price of food stuffs AND creating more co2 in then having to bring in food for people from other places miles away
Add to the fact that huge machines cut using diesel as do these tractors from West Wight along with the huge traffic stuck behind them, and only a complete blinkered green fool would still ‘think’ it is ‘somehow’ saving the planet.
All it does is create the image of being green, when it clearly isn’t.
Young lads driving like nutters!
