Immigration raids carried out at restaurants in Ryde and Sandown resulted in the discovery of 6 illegal workers last night (Wednesday), Island Echo can reveal.
Acting on intelligence, Immigration Enforcement Officers from the Home Office visited both Eastern Eye in Sandown and Monsoon in Ryde.
At Eastern Eye, which was the first to be visited at 19:15, checks identified that 3 males were working illegally. A 16-year-old Iraqi national and a 22-year-old Bangladeshi national had no permission to work, while a 56-year-old, also from Bangladesh, had overstayed his visa.
The older Bangladeshi man was transferred to immigration detention pending his removal from the UK, while the younger Bangladeshi was escorted from the premises by immigration officers. Safeguarding and social service checks were carried out on the Iraqi national and he was returned to his foster family.
At Monsoon, which was visited at 22:15, officers found 3 Bangladeshi men working there illegally. A 29-year-old and 42-year-old had both overstayed their visas, while a 33-year-old had no permission to work. The younger man was transferred to immigration detention pending his removal from the UK, while the other 2 were ordered to report to Immigration Enforcement while their cases are progressed. The 42-year-old also has an outstanding application.
The businesses were served civil penalty referral notices warning that financial penalties of up to £20,000 per illegal worker found will be imposed, unless the employer can demonstrate that appropriate right-to-work document checks were carried out such as seeing a passport or Home Office document confirming permission to work.
If proof is not provided, this is a potential total fine of up to £60,000 each for both Eastern Eye and Monsoon.
Immigration officials headed back to the mainland during the early hours of this morning.

This is not the first time Illegal immigrants have been caught at Monsoon!
So, it figures, with little reason to deter them, it may well not be the last
Maybe you should keep a tally chart then hun? You might find that this is the first, and only 1 was officially caught. The others were not illegal. If a business is caught multiple times, how can they possibly continue to run? A fine of £60,000 from just one time? Ask yourself that. Everything is exaggerated, they have to find a way to spice up IslandEcho.
Now we see why people on the Island cannot find jobs. Greedy employers using cheap labour.
I’d like to see you make an ethnic chicken vindaloo, Ron.
good!
Illegally working, which means cash in hand, which means no tax or NI paid by the employee or the employer. Other food outlets would be undercut by them, as their running costs would be much lower.
Every man for themselves in this world, you’ll soon learn that ‘none given’…..
Joking, I know how everyones so up tight here in the comments.
you are absolutely correct Tina, it is everyone for themselves, that is why the immigration were called and they have been raided. This ensures that others who felt they were suffering because of the perceived edge these people had are now, happy that competition has been removed and they can now prosper, whilst these two restaurants are bogged down in red tape and fines.
Send em home!!
Some just didn’t have right to work. Not all were illegal. Know your facts please before you speak.
if they do not have the right to work, then they should be self sufficient for the duration of their stay If they work illegally, they are in breach of their visa and should be removed and sent to the country that they state they are normally resident in, as is the case for british citizens abroad.
Try Ryde Bakery
I’m sure they can definitely hook everyone up with a vindaloo, keema naan and maybe some poppadoms on the side? Can’t be forgetting the mint sauce.
Look above Ryde post office theres a few living there
Not every coloured person is an immigrant, please open your eyes. I know living on the island is easy to be passive racist.
Hear hear Tina
Tina do YOU have a buggy full? Or are you connected in anyway to either accused premises ?
tina – virtue signalling is so last year.
C green made no reference to skin colour in the comment – you did, that makes you the racist, for playing the race card.
People should boycott these places IF true. For every illegal is depriving our children of a chance in life, taking a home, a job and our taxes, along with stealth taxes and cutbacks, to subsidise these criminals.
Just because they work, doesn’t mean that they aren’t a burden on the rest of us eventually. Imagine if half the third world arrived. Such would lower wages, and for the same reason of supply and demand, raise rents.
NOT a victimless crime.
You think people choose to come to this country and work hard illegally for a living? Please ask yourself why you think they work. Answer is to pay for the lives of their kids who aren’t as fortunate. It’s not their fault that most lazy people take benefits. Argue amongst yourself. No one chooses to break the law, it’s just their trying to feed their kids. How can they take a home, they can’t rent or get a mortgage, they can’t even get a bank account so….
Hear hear, Tina.
As they are NOT living in a cardboard box, then OF COURSE they take a home, and by the time that immigrant dies of old age, they will have ‘taken’ several homes as they have huge amounts of offspring.
Whilst we can ‘understand’ that they wish to have a better, cushy life for ‘themselves’ as well as all their offspring, SURELY YOU can see, the we, the Island people EQUALLY don’t want these illegal people here, STEALING our homes our jobs, a place in front of us at the doctors, the dentist, on the road, on the bus, etc etc.
AS MUCH as they want to better their lot in life, it is at the EXPENSE of OURS.
They IF they are worried about ‘feeding their kids’ ought to use condoms, so IF their life is so very miserable WHY bring more beings into such, IF they are oh so caring? They are NOT caring, just scheming, in their ‘own’ land they would have to work much harder for much less so just crafty, using OUR grandparents sacrifice made for US for their selfish needs.
Just an excuse to have an easy life at others expense.
We could equally say, WE are fed up in living in a tiny flat, having a small car, BUT we don’t ALL go and steal someone elses larger home and car.
Stay in your own land, and work their and then gain LEGAL emigration rights.
YOU me thinks has a vested interest in defending such.
That or just a dappy naïve idiot. YOU pay, YOU put them up in YOUR home, YOU pay for their NHS and educational costs, then SEE if YOU are ‘still’ so keen. YOUR ‘sort’ are all the same, FINE so long as ‘someone’ else is footing the bill, or having to live with them.
tina – why do they risk there families by showing up here, without obtaining the correct work visas first?
do not use the fleeing persecution argument, as france, italy etc are not hostile countries and they have to pass through europe first to get to the UK.
Superb comment
Read mine, it is honest, and correct, not the dim naïve ramblings of someone shoving a buggy full.
It’s high time that the authorities took a robust line with illegal immigrants and those employers who fail to carry out proper due dilligence checks.
Fine them heavily. Monsoon is always getting caught.
Haven’t Monsoon been caught before? You would have thought they would have learnt their lesson! A fine like that again could close them down!
Good!!! Kick them out the country!
Disgustingly passive racist, Golly. Only 1 was illegal. The others just had no right to work. Kicking them out the country won’t make those taking benefits in the economy any better. Open your eyes Golly, you can’t just be getting a typical Gary to be making your chicken madras and lamb bhuna. Please become more educated for the sake of society.
Kick them out, as they are sneaky and underhanded, due to the fact that they did not obtain a work visa before arriving. There are thousands of people living and working in these types of restaurants, who have followed the correct procedure before arriving. Why should others be allowed to skip the rules. Once registered and issued with a work visa, you are on the system and pay your taxes like the rest of us.
Why should we bust our arses and see money deducted from our salaries, while these schemers aren’t getting any tax deducted.
Dog eat dog world, they will get grassed up at every turn, to ensure they aren’t getting away without paying their share of income tax, national insurance and pension contributions and that includes their complicit employer.
2 of the illegal’s at the Monsoon were ordered to report to Immigration Enforcement ??? really anyone expecting them to turn up ??
I should imagine they’re now tucked up safely somewhere in Newham in east London..
This means that those illegal workers have never received food hygiene or food handling training, putting the public at risk. These premises should receive an immediate visit from the council, if they don’t the council is responsible for any outbreak of food poisoning.
Perhaps if the business owner or the person responsible for hiring staff, was made personally liable for allowing illegals to work, then they may think twice. Rather than fine the business, fine the individual that took them on and if they cannot pay – take their home, their possessions, their cash and send them to the dole as penniless job seekers. Maybe then they won’t be so keen to employ illegals, if their own personal wealth was at risk.
I am absolutely shocked to hear that monsoon once again have been busted for having illegal immigrants surely if this company can remain open after the fine that they will suffer and having previously been fined for the exact same offence questions have to be asked as to how this restaurant/the owners can afford such fines I would pose the question that if they break the law in their Hiring of staff then maybe they Are breaking the law in the reporting of financial figures and we also have to question if they are adhering to the law In respect to health and safety. I have to say having visited the restaurant for many years the service I received from Sam was always impeccable and the food was always astounding however I stopped going to monsoon because the father was extremely rude to me and a friend and as a result lost my custom.
I got food poisoning from a vegetable dish in Monsoon. They definitely don’t know how to do food safety.
You can eat vegetables raw, Llymaya. I doubt you got food poisoning from a vegetable dish.
yes you can get food poisoning from a veg dish – if it is contaminated by someone who isn’t following food hygiene procedures.
Why do we tell them to report to immigration enforcement? I would think that is really going to happen NOT.
As its not the first time Monsoon has been caught doing this how on earth can they afford to pay the fine and STILL.stay open??
Exactly, all these fines how can a restaurant stay open? Maybe because everything you read is exaggerated and not true. I can tell you this for a fact.
if everyone boycotts the places, they will close down due to lack of business
Any idiot can cook, or even buy a decent Curry now at any supermarket. Don’t give these people your cash, boycott their premises for they if proven, again, know these workers are a danger to the public, and are abusing our system.
The whole lot ought to be packed up and sent back to wherever they originally come from but they won’t. So it is up to us to show we are not happy by keeping away from such places.
The law is too weak now to deter these beings, BUT OUR CASH isn’t.
Monsoon is the worst place in Ryde. Should of gone years ago. Disgraceful service and disgusting food
Go away Tina
You have not a clue!!!!
