4 ARRESTED IN CONNECTION WITH NEWPORT TOWN ASSAULT

UPDATED: 4 men have been arrested as part of an investigation into an assault in the middle of Newport town yesterday afternoon (Thursday).

At around 16:00, Police were called to the Bowling Green Lane area near the bus station following reports of an incident involved a number of people.

Officers arrived on scene to find a 25-year-old male covered in blood having sustained a head injury. It was quickly established that the casualty’s mobile phone had been stolen too.

The 25-year-old was conveyed to St Mary’s Hospital for treatment. He has since been discharged.

Hampshire Constabulary have confirmed that a 21-year-old man, a 22-year-old man, a 31-year-old man and a 37-year-old man have all been arrested on suspicion of being involved in the incident. They remain in custody this morning.

UPDATE @ 16:31 – The 4 men have been released from custody without charge, but remain under investigation.

Police are appealing for any witnesses to the incident, especially anyone who heard racial abuse being shouted, to come forward.
