Out-of-date food, flies in the kitchen and shellfish being stored on the work surfaces – these are just some of the factors that contributed to Sea View Yacht Club being handed a 1-star food hygiene rating.
The establishment, located on Esplanade in Seaview, was given a 1-star rating following the visit of the Environmental Health Officers (EHO) from the Isle of Wight Council on 8th August 2023.
During the inspection, no fewer than 13 faults were found in the operation of the yacht club.
The most notable defect found by inspectors was a large amount of foodstuffs beyond their sell-by date including; bacon, vegetable sausages, applewood cheese, vegan mayonnaise, blended avocado, tartare sauce, mushy peas, salami, corrisham, gallybagger cheese, parmesan, ale chutney, jalapeno, chilli flakes and oregano.
It was also found that some food in the freezers, which included lobster stored in large containers, was not labelled.
Inspectors found a large number of dead flies in and around the kitchen.
Some high-risk foods including scallops were being stored on the work surface during the inspection at an ambient temperature, some 5c above the recommended. These scallops were disposed of during the inspection. Elsewhere sauces and condiments were also being stored at an ambient temperature as opposed to being put in the fridge.
Whilst taking a look inside the fridge it was noted that some foodstuffs were uncovered, presenting a high contamination risk.
There was a lack of hand wash basins in the pizza/BBQ and food servery area and other cleanliness issues such as mouldy fridge and freezer seals, dirty ovens and cobwebs above worksurfaces were also found.
The kitchen floor was also badly damaged from burn marks and was ripped in places. Plaster on the walls was perished and the painted ceiling was beginning to flake, falling onto work surface.
Food Hygiene Rating – Scores on the Doors
Compliance with food hygiene and safety procedures – 15
Compliance with structural requirements – 20
Confidence in management/control procedures – 10
Total score: 45 (1 rating)
A spokesperson from Sea View Yacht Club, has said:
“The inspection was undertaken during the summer, on the first day for a newly appointed head chef who was only a few hours into their first shift – a tough break for the incoming chef who was still relatively unfamiliar with the kitchen.
“The report points to a number of easily rectifiable points, which were remedied immediately, and some relatively minor facility maintenance issues which are now in hand. We anticipate a reinspection in due course to confirm these improvements.”

So much for being posh
If you think Seaview is posh mate, you need to open your eyes and travel. Nothing posh about it. Just a 2x multiple on house prices….
When it says “out of date food and flies”, were the flies out of date as well or were they fresh?
Shut this dirty filthy place down – owners should be prosecuted
How can ‘Chilli Flake’ be passed it’s sell by date!
This is rather funny as the Type’s that frequent such establishment wouldn’t ever eat at McDonald’s or KFC because they believe it’s poor quality cheap food, not fresh and unclean !. Funny how then they get 5 stars.
Oh lord the grammar… I frequent that place. I eat McDonald’s and KFC. Grew up on a council estate for 16 years. Just didn’t sit there rotting and actually did something with my life. Nothing posh about sailing. It’s far cheaper than my power boat!
Omg and Seaview think they are posh!!!!
No excuse for dirt out of date food etc ,should be closed down ….
Why are staff so ignorant and lazy????
Clean as you go throw out food out of date ,!!!
Simple …
Wow, how unlucky was that new chef. All those items that happened to go out of date on the day they started and to top it off, on the very same day the plaster fell off the walls and the floor started to fall apart. If only the inspectors came the day before it would have been a 5 star rating for sure.
Pathetic response from the club. Showing the attitude that led to such a poor score. The new chef isn’t to blame for the out of date food during your peak season, or the faults with the building. Management need to take responsibility and not just the profits.
It wasn’t the new chef that put all that out of date food on the premises or killed those flies and permitted their relatives to prevail, was it? Or left unlabelled, uncovered food around? How dare the “spokesperson” even mention a new chef as any sort of justification whatsoever. Disgusting.
Typically of the wealthy. It is NEVER them at fault.
. Think they are soo clever yet most can do nothing for themselves. So without their money paying the plebs they look down upon their lack of basic skills would show them for what they really are.
Who is the wealthy here? Can you provide the proof? You have their bank statements? Most people in Seaview are mortgages up to the eyeballs and also have their cars etc on finance. They’re probably bread lined like half the people hating the “rich” on this post.
You would of had to be wealthy to secure the mortgage in the first place…thats how it works
Disgusting. Disgusting.
Just goes to show even where the wealthy eat, the food is poor.
With these people what you get is an illusion that they are superior to everyone else. The reality is that they live in squalor but try and convince people they are posh.
Superb advertising at no cost to them, brilliant!
‘Serves’ the ‘filthy’ rich right.
Why mention the new chef that’s nothing to do with him/her.
Its the owners fault.
They should be shut down until a full clean has been checked.
How dare these people put customers health at risk.
We never eat out anymore, too many filthy, over priced, dirty pups and restaurants, just cannot trust them anymore.
Do the inspectors look at the toilets when checking these places? health and safety!
The chef needs to stick 2 fingers up to management for hinting he/she is to blame for not putting things right in their first few hours of shift, But am sure other kitchen worker’s did not start on the same day, it’s down to all to notice issue’s, management need a kick up the arse and accept blame.
Squalid. I’m surprised the grotties didn’t poison anyone.
Basics health and safety. Nothing to do with new Chef. Absolutely rubbish defence.
Dirty hole for dirty folk.
How did they achieve a mark of One?
The Grotties don’t know what good food is anyway. Shame on the Yacht Club for blaming New Chef
And you do. Fast food at £1.99. I bet you feel like your in heaven.
Saw you eating out of the bins in the Yacht Club
So you wish you live in Seaview. Shame you can only visit.poor boy.
Living in the door of the YC isn’t living in Seaview lol
I think you mean living in the door way. Am I right.
Why are they blaming the new chef? It’s his first day on the job…
