The main road between Newport and Sandown will be closed for 3 days before motorists face almost 2 months of temporary traffic lights, as part of a scheme to improve pedestrian safety on the A3056.
The works will take place at Hale Common, where significant improvements are planned to make it safer and easier for pedestrians to access local bus stops and nearby attractions.
The scheme will deliver new footways along the A3056 between the junction of Watery Lane and the existing bus stop located around 100 metres north-west of the entrance to Isle of Wight Tomatoes.
New uncontrolled pedestrian crossing points will also be installed to help pedestrians cross the busy road more safely and confidently.
The project will be carried out in 2 phases.
Phase 1 will involve the removal of an existing traffic island on the A3056, located just north-west of the junction with Watery Lane. This will be replaced with a pedestrian refuge.
To carry out this work safely, a section of the A3056 will be closed for 3 days between Wednesday 13th May and Friday 15th May, during the hours of 09:30 and 15:30. Temporary traffic lights will be in operation outside of these hours, but will be removed once this phase is complete.
During the closure periods, access to premises will be restricted depending on location. Properties north-west of the traffic island, including The Fighting Cocks Public House and Isle of Wight Tomatoes, will only be accessible via Arreton. Meanwhile, premises to the south-east, including businesses on Watery Lane, will only be accessible via Apse Heath.
Phase 2 will then see the construction of the new footways and associated crossing points. This stage will be carried out under temporary traffic signals from Monday 1st June through to Friday 24th July, meaning motorists can expect delays on the main Newport to Sandown route for almost 2 months.
Throughout the works, access to all residential and business properties will be maintained at all times. Temporary traffic lights will also be removed for the duration of the Isle of Wight Festival weekend to help ease congestion.
The improvements have been funded by the Department for Transport as part of its Safer Roads programme, with Island Roads responsible for delivering the scheme. The wider programme includes a series of measures along the A3056 aimed at improving safety for all road users.

Oh FFS,.. here we go again.!!!
Is there no end to the suffering Island Roads are going to subject residents and visitors to??
They are putting the island in Lockdown
If motorists were not so utterly selfish pedestrians would be allowed to cross the road as they have the right to do!
We’ve just managed to get from Ventnor to Newport through Wroxall for the first time since November, then they start to destroy Newport for a few days, now a week or more, and as soon as that gets sorted we are back to stupid traffic light delays getting through Arreton! Tourists will love the adventure of getting from A to B.
ALL THESE ROADWORKS YET THE NUMPTIES ARE NOT
INSTALLING SPEED CAMERAS!
REMEMBER NUMPTIES 20MPH IS PLENTY
And just when you thought it might be possible to complete a journey without roadworks along comes our favourite PFI, Island Roads. I think PFI obviously stands for Perpetual F*** Up Incorporated. Still, look on the bright side, at least that incredibly crucial little musical soirée will be all right.
Here we go again. No other words really. Total bu….it
Move the bus stop.
who is going to risk using an uncontrolled crossing in a 50 mile an hour limit?
I have said it many times on here, this island doesn’t need speed limits above 50mph on A roads, 40mph on B roads, 30mph on all other roads (where permitting & SAFE to do so), 20mph through Towns & Villages and 500 metres zones eitherside of a school entrance onto a road.
If the council and Police are serious about making it safer for all road users, cyclists and pedestrians on the island it has to start with killing speed first not people.
We should all be aiming for a “Vision Zero” safer roads policy to help prevent not only any road death on the Island, but all accidents across the island, backed up with hefty penalties from judges in the most serious of speeding or road collision cases caused by speeding and not just fixed penalties from the Police.
No parent or family member should ever want to experience a knock at the door to find a Police office stood on there door step about to inform them that a loved one has been seriously or fatality injured as a result of a road traffic collision through speed or careless driving, no one.
This would also have a positive effect as the less recorded accidents on the island would be reflected through all our vehicle insurance premiums which are already considerably lower than on the main land.
20mph is plenty
I drove through Brading this evening and numpties
