19-year-old Tyler Ball has been sentenced to 14 weeks in prison after he burgled a beachside cafe in Ryde and attempted to break into another in May last year.
Ball, previously of George Street in Ryde but now of Chalet Hill in Bordon, Hampshire pleaded guilty to burglary other than dwelling (theft) and attempt burglary other than dwelling with intent to steal when he appeared before the Isle of Wight Magistrates Court in September last year.
The charges relate to an incident during the early hours of 30th May 2024 during which Ball, and accomplice Luis Montague, broke into Appley Beach Cafe and stole £105 worth of alcohol and a bank card. They also tried to break into The Dell cafe at the other end of Appley.
Last September’s case was adjourned for a pre-sentence report to be compiled, with Ball due to appear before the same court on 29th November – but he failed to surrender to bail. As a result, a warrant for his arrest was issued.
Ball was hauled before Portsmouth Magistrates Court on 8th January where he was finally sentenced. At this hearing, he pleaded guilty to a further offence of failing to surrender to bail.
Magistrates handed Tyler Ball a 14-week custodial sentence for his failure to surrender to bail, his failure to engage in court proceedings and the targeting of businesses for burglary. He was ordered to pay a £154 surcharge but it was deemed he could not pay compensation due to limited means.
Co-defendant Luis Montague, 20, of St John’s Road in Shanklin, also pleaded guilty to the burglary and attempted burglary last September. He was also due to be sentenced in November but failed to comply with a pre-sentence report, with his case now adjourned for sentencing on 7th February.
What Goes Around Comes Around!
That will be a period of his life Mr Ball is unlikely to forget.
