A 65-year-old from Sandown who stole from high street retailers to fund his alcohol addiction has been fined £120.
Stephen Jones, 65, of St John’s Road in Sandown pleaded guilty to 3x theft from a shop when he appeared at the Isle of Wight Magistrates Court earlier this week (25th July).
Prosecuting Liz Miller, told the court that on the 10th June, Jones was spotted in M&S in Newport acting oddly before being seen walking across the car park ripping tags off products he had taken. CCTV showed Jones on camera near the men’s section before leaving the shop and making no attempt to pay.
Later in the month on 17th June, Jones stole foodstuffs from B&M before a member of staff recovered them not far from the exit, CCTV once more showed Jones making no attempt to pay for the goods he was taking.
Finally, on 8th July Jones was stopped outside of M&S with a bag full of alcohol. Jones admitted that he made no attempt to pay with CCTV showing this. The goods were recovered by a member of M&S staff.
Defending, Oscar Vincent said that his client was stealing because he was alcohol dependent and that at the time of the incident, Jones was vulnerable due to homelessness – something which is no longer an issue in his life. He also added that Jones was being assessed for alcohol related dementia.
Jones, a man of previous good character, was fined £120 and ordered to pay surcharge fee of £48.

All the stock excuses. He’ll be stealing again within days

yeah right, at 65 years old, he just hadn’t been caught before – this guy will have been doing this plenty of times before.
He a old fart so watch out on the roads and keep the kids safe
Cheers bigears!
Probably started breeding at 15 and has scores of lowlife kids, grandkids and great grandkids.
If he stole from M&S first, then B&M afterwards, he obviously wasn’t stealing from the rich to give to the poor.
