A retired doctor from Havenstreet has been banned from the roads for 12 months after she admitted to those on a petrol forecourt that she had been drink driving.
Ide McCarthy, 63, 0f St Peters Court in Havenstreet, pleaded guilty to drink driving when she appeared at the Isle of Wight Magistrates Court on Tuesday (3rd October).
Prosecuting, Lauren Stone told the court that on the evening of 15th July 2023, Police received reports that a woman had driven whilst drunk in Newport.
McCarthy, who had driven to Sainsbury’s Petrol Station on Hunnycross Way, had admitted to people on the forecourt that she had been drinking and thus an ambulance was called and she was taken to St Mary’s Hospital. It was at the Island’s only hospital that tests were carried out.
Due to a medical reason, McCarthy was unable to give blood however a urine test was carried out which returned a reading of 138 milligrammes of alcohol in 100 millilitres of urine. The legal limit is 107.
CCTV on the forecourt of the petrol station showed McCarthy at the wheel of her Toyota Yaris.
Defending the 63-year-old, Michael McGoldrick said that McCarthy had made admissions to those at petrol station and decided to hand herself in. He also added that his client was now more aware that she does in fact have an issue with alcohol and that she is actively seeking help to address it.
Magistrates handed the 63-year-old retiree a 12-month driving disqualification. She was also ordered to pay a fine of £725, costs of £85 and a surcharge fee of £290.

An ambulance was called? What a complete waste of their valuable time. You could have walked her to the hospital in 10-15 minutes from Sainsburys petrol station, or get her to stump up for a taxi for her own stupidity
These boy racers are destroying our Island!
“Boy racers” ? There was I thinking that the item referred to a mature woman driver.
Especially with Dr’s stiking
What is “stiking” ?
Hang on a second! Havenstreet without a car? This is a death sentence! How could the council do this! Cruel and unusual punishment!
Not at all. Self confessed alcoholic who has probably done this multiple times. Good job she’s not behind a wheel. What’s the Council got to do with her sentencing?
She was a doctor too! Don’t tell you that does it! Should have know better!
What part of the article “..Don’t tell you that..”?? The headline states she was a Retired Doctor; the first three words reiterate this? *head in hands*
Should know better being a Dr
Only one way to deal with drink drivers, instant imprisonment
Anit you pissed when built your Wendy house
Why the hell did CSD in ambulance control agree to send an ambulance? Idiots.
She has been through so much herself 🙁 Saddens me to read this. Of course inexcusable but such a shame she has ended up in this position. Thankfully no one was hurt and I really hope she gets the help she needs.
I’d have made her walk bare foot to the hospital in shackles tight around her ankles so her legs bleed then walk back to the police station she should be sentenced to ten years in prison without the possibility of early release fined £100,000 and banned from driving for life same goes for all drink driver’s
And they should be flogged with the scourge daily while in prison
