A Newport man who was caught drug driving on a moped has been banned from the roads for 12 months.
Benjamin Norris, 20, of Albany Road in Newport, admitted drive motor vehicle with a proportion of specified drug above the specified limit, when he appeared at the Isle of Wight Magistrates Court earlier this week (29th January).
Prosecuting, Lauren McConnell, told the court that on the evening of 10th August at around 23:30 Police were on patrol in Newport after they received reports of a moped being driven in a suspect manner.
A short while later, Police stopped a moped rider – though the court heard how there was so suggestion Norris was the man Police were looking for – and approached him.
Norris was ID’d and admitted to Police that he was a user of cannabis. A roadside drugs wipe was conducted in which an above-level reading for the class-B drug was recorded.
The court heard how Norris was due to appear at the Isle of Wight Magistrates Court on 7th January but he didn’t receive the postal requisition and so a warrant for his arrest was issued. The 20-year-old handed himself in to Police on Tuesday evening ahead of his appearance on Wednesday.
Defending, Jim Osborne, told the court that Norris deserved credit for his early guilty plea and that he has not ridden since the day he was stopped.
Magistrates handed Norris a 12-month driving ban and fined him £249. He was ordered to pay £85 costs and a £100 surcharge fee.
Such a shame uneducated druggies are not
Banged up.
They are risking the lives of normal persons.
Bang him up and throw away the key.
The Island is full of druggies thesedays,
so sad.
The people who commit drink/drug driving should be made to see photos of the carnage that could occur because of their selfish, irresponsible action.
When I was training for a full motorcycle licence, our instructor had several before and after pictures which brought home how lethal cars etc are and the values of wearing the right clothing. Made a lot of young riders change their attitude, could work for this also!
