An 11-year-old boy who fell into the sea and started drowning was rescued by eagle-eyes lifeguards in Sandown this afternoon (Thursday)
The youngster, who can’t swim, accidentally slipped off the concrete groyne and entered the water.
A lifeguard was quickly deployed with the rescue board and saved the boy from drowning.
After being pulled from the water, the 11-year-old was given first aid at the lifeguard hut. Words of warning were given about the risks of secondary drowning.
A spokesperson for Ryde Lifeguards, who are providing a lifeguard service in Sandown this summer, has said:
“Please avoid walking or jumping off of the groynes, especially if you are not a strong swimmer and ensure you swim between the red and yellow flags!”
“This incident was outside the red and yellow flags, so the boy is lucky the lifeguard team were so vigilant and noticed”.

An 11 year old child nearly drowning is not good news in my opinion.
Thank god they saw him. With more & more people going to beaches especially now school holidays, surely they should increase lifeguards & more places.
At least money well spent on Life guards, well done.
Where were his parents?
A bar or starring at a screen showing off to their bestees their wonderful tax credit paid hol is my guess

I would encourage all youngsters to learn to swim even basic stroke you never know when it may save your life . Hats off to the lifeguard, well done
There was a time when most junior schools had a pool or took the kids to a local pool for lessons and by the age of 11 they could swim to save their lives at least.
