Newport marked 100 years of carnival history yesterday evening (Thursday) with one of the biggest and most spectacular turnouts of floats and spectators for an illuminated event in decades.
The parade – which took over a full 40 minutes to pass – was headed by the agricultural vehicles of the Young Farmers. This was followed by a procession of a varied selection of classic cars.
The crowds were wooed by a selection of Carnival Royalty from the Island’s main towns and former Newport Carnival Queens. Popular musical accompaniment was provided by the Medina Marching Band, Vectis Corps of Drums, and the Isle of Wight Highland Pipes and Drums. A highlight of the parade was the Wight Strollers’ magnificent Mexican Day of the Dead performance.
Refreshments for the hard-working committee members and Carnival Queens were provided by Domino’s, one of many businesses to support Newport Carnival this year.
Carnival Committee Chair Paddy McHugh has said:
“I took on as acting chair for June about 18 months ago and said we would make our 100 the biggest. We delivered that with flying colours . From the main in July to the illuminated last night, the crowds were insane. Never have I seen Newport so so busy. What an atmosphere!
“There are so so many local businesses that have come on board this year, which is how it used to be. So many people to thank which I will personally soon. Again, a massive thank you team and to you the public.”
