‘You are playing with peoples lives and it is just foolish and wrong’ – that is the message from firefighters in Freshwater after they were called out to yet another fire in the open this evening (Tuesday).
The retained crew were called to woodland behind School Green Road, Freshwater after being alerted to the situation by a member of the public.
Firefighters are urging Islanders not to light fires in the open due to the current coronavirus crisis. Bonfires and other fires don’t just affect people’s breathing but puts the firefighters at risk of transmitting coronavirus as they work in close quarters.
Taking to social media, Freshwater Fire Station has said:
“When you do things like this you are playing with peoples lives and it is just foolish and wrong. Every time we are called out we and our families and the wider community are put at risk.
“Please follow the government guidance and stay home and help keep everyone safe”.

Soon be school holidays, parents need to have a word, they must comeback smelling of smoke.
Little shits as if emergency services haven’t got enough on there hands parents keep your little shits in there cages
*Their. If you’re going to make derogatory comments, then at least make sure they are grammatically correct.
Silly low life no consideration for other peoples lifes
The crew must have been short as the watch manager getting his gloves dirty , seriously come on kids behave as fire has the ability to kill
So does a car but that doesn’t stop you driving to work or to the shops?
That’s a bit of a silly answer
Does this station take a photographer with them on every call out?
Everyone automatically assuming this was kids…the last 2 arson reports on island echo have been committed by adults. Don’t assume before you know the facts. Whoever this was it’s disgusting, even more so given the global situation. Stay home, be kind…and stop setting bloody fires!!
If kids are out doing this, what the hell is wrong with them. Why are their parents allowing them out….what sort of upbringing have they had to be so stupid and do this. These kids need bringing into line and QUICK
Isn’t this just the sort of thing the Police should be policing, rather than just driving around in their cars.
A hearty thank you to the fire services for having to attend these acts of stupidity.
“Just driving around”…you have no clue.
To the people saying it’s kids. It’s not. A few years back someone was damaging cars in Carisbooke. At the time people blamed the kids. Turned out to bu a man who was over 60. Unless you know, stop blaming the kids. A lot of fires are adults burning garden rubbish and it getting out of control.
