The Isle of Wight is one of the best places in the country to discover buried treasure, figures reveal.
According to official statistics from the Digital, Culture, Media & Sport Treasure and portable antiquities statistics collection, the total number of finds on the Island per 100,000 people since 2012 sits at 129.3. That’s significantly higher than the second-best place to find buried treasure, Norfolk, with a rate of 100.3. Nearby Dorset is ranked 3rd with a rate of 87.2 per 100,000 population.
Between 2012 and 2019 that were a total of 184 finds on the Isle of Wight, which has a rich history dating all the way back to before the Bronze Age. The best yield was reported in 2013 with 30 finds that year alone, according to the report by jewellerybox.
Best search quickly, before the council cover every green available space with a ‘home’ for someone to overfill and then ‘wonder’ why there is a lack of houses here.
