Yarmouth Gig Rowing Club is celebrating a successful year both on and off the water, with wins at key coastal rowing events and a 25% increase in membership.
The club, which has been active for over 10 years, promotes traditional fixed-seat rowing on the Isle of Wight and regularly competes in regattas across the south coast. This season, crews took part in a record number of events, including races in the Solent, Canvey Island and Loch Ness.
Among the standout results were:
- Tudor Challenge – Hosted by Tudor Sailing Club
1st place and Winner of the Tudor Relic Trophy – Men’s Vets Crew (over 50s) - Cockleshell Challenge – Hosted by Eastney Cruising Club
1st in Class (Cornish Gigs), 1st in Men’s Open Category, and 1st in Super Vets (over 50s) - Three Harbours Race – Hosted by Itchenor Sailing Club
1st in Class (Cornish Gigs)
The club operates from Yarmouth Harbour using two Cornish Pilot Gigs and a Solent Galley, with races crewed by 4 to 6 rowers plus a cox. Despite the challenges of transporting large boats to the mainland for events, the club continues to compete successfully and expand its reach.
Yarmouth Gig Rowing Club welcomes both recreational and competitive rowers and has an even gender split, with mixed crews being the norm for both training and racing.

“Yarmouth Gig Rowing Club has had a tremendously successful year. We competed successfully in a record number of regattas around the Solent and indeed further afield, winning some silverware along the way and our membership has grown significantly this year.
“For a small club based on the Isle of Wight this is really quite an achievement.”
