The Government has launched ‘an all-out attack on nature’ with its mini-budget, Hampshire & Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust has warned.
The Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB), the Wildlife Trusts and the National Trust have all criticised the Government over planned policies announced on Friday (23rd September).
On Friday evening, RSBP England posted a lengthy Twitter thread in which it criticised the Government’s proposed 38 investment zones. These are areas in England where planning rules will be loosened to release more land for commercial and housing developments.
Debbie Tann, Chief Executive of Hampshire & Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust, said:
“This all-out attack on nature is completely unprecedented. The government is abandoning all manifesto promises for nature’s recovery, instead choosing a bonfire of the environmental laws they now describe as ‘burdens’.
“Without these basic safeguards, there will be a desperate fight for Hampshire and the Isle of Wight’s precious natural assets, a free-for-all, with wildlife and communities inevitably losing out to development and intensive land use.
“The Government’s plans for growth rest precariously on a seemingly willing ignorance of the fact that you cannot create a sustainable economy or resilient society, without a healthy environment.
“Reneging on their commitments to address the ecological crisis and invest in nature is gambling all of our futures for uncertain short-term economic gains. This is reckless and irresponsible, and it has to stop.”

The “mini budget” is an attack on everything and anything that isn’t a multi-millionaire.
That woman will finish this country off. She needs removing. Shes completely out of touch with reality, God help us
Don’t worry this lot and their ‘get richer, sod everyone else’ policies will be out soon.
And can only hope the next lot are environmentally friendly.
Ironically it may do nature some good. As many humans may die of hunger, cold, or be stabbed to death as crime soars by those who choose not to ‘go without’
Bloody Tories. Between Truss and Kwartang they will bring the UK to its knees. Our wildlife must not be allowed to be destroyed to make way for more unwanted housing. Carefully planned, affordable housing is what’s needed.
Who needs nature or fresh air when we can all help friends of Tories earn more money and allow them to build second homes on the Island.
Bet Bob is a happy, so many friends to build second homes here for !
