A bright and well thought out Christmas lights display at Whitecross Lane in Shanklin has been crowned the winner of Light up the Wight 2021!
Hundreds of families jumped in their cars – or on the Southern Vectis Christmas Lights tour bus – to enjoy the wonderful array of festive lights across the Island, with the official Light up the Wight map leading the way.
A record-breaking 37 properties were included on the map and in the competition for 2021, with more than 2,300 votes cast by Island Echo readers during the month of December.
The winning display at Whitecross Lane, curated by Liam Turrell, is a fairly new display but one that has grown rapidly in recent years. On a number of select nights, Liam and his family welcomed visitors into a Santa’s Grotto where presents were handed out to local youngsters. His efforts raised over £800 for Daisy Chains IW.
More than £3,500 has been raised for Island charities during the 2021 season thanks to the generosity of visitors to the 37 displays, with that total set to increase soon when the Ramplins at Long Lane, Newport reveal their fundraising total. Bannock Road raised £1270 for Alzhymers Society, whilst Alvertstone Road generated £531.32 for Hampshire & Isle of Wight Air Ambulance.
Thanks to the continued support of event sponsor Southern Vectis, the top 3 displays have each received prize money to put towards this year’s display. Whitecross Lane receives £250, Wellesley Way in Newport receives £100 and Green Lane, Shanklin (81A) £50.
Light up the Wight will return in 2022 with entries set to open in November. For updates see www.islandecho.co.uk/xmas.

Given the expected hikes in electricity charges this sadly might have been the last year people bothered with/were able to put on such displays.
