The replacement of the Westminster Grill across Lukely Brook, the blocking of which was a contributory factor in the Christmas floods that hit Newport in 2013, is well underway and almost complete.
Speaking today, Cllr Chris Whitehouse (Conservative, Newport West) who has been working with the Environment Agency and Southern Water to address the threats of repeat flooding says:
“The good news is the bulk of the new grill, which can be seen on the left hand side in image attached, will be installed by Friday this week. There will be some additional fabrication required such as steps and gates, but the main body of the two stage grill will be complete.
“I’m particularly pleased we’re getting a two stage grill because this will increase the surface area available to catch debris and provide a safer environment for operatives to work during a flood event should they be called upon to clear debris that otherwise would block the grill.”
