Another Isle of Wight council has joined in with ‘No Mow May’.
It is part of a national campaign to support biodiversity and wildlife, in which we are asked to let grass grow longer, to provide food for insects and bees.
Ventnor Town Council will leave 15 of its 18 green spaces uncut, for the rest of the month.
Only the Cascades, Ventnor Park and part of Salisbury Gardens will be mowed, to make them usable at forthcoming events.
The council has asked its ground maintenance contractor, O’Connor’s, to continue with its other jobs, this month, but to let the grass grow.
The Isle of Wight Council is also taking part, however, for safety reasons, it will mow the first metre of roadside verges and some outdoor sport and recreation spaces. Meanwhile, Ventnor Town Council is calling on residents to join in and consider leaving lawns uncut in May.
Mowing will resume as normal in June.
i didn’t think the council cut grass any moor so how can they do a no mow may unless it’s out side there homes then it will get a weekly cut

Where does that portion of tax money get spent then ?
I presume O Connor are contracted to cut it so will be claiming the money. Its like your boss telling you to stay home without pay.
Red letter date and expenses for councillors and the other idiots on the council – or maybe they’ll chuck it at the chain ferry along with the rest of the money they’ve wasted….

No mow may turns into no mower can cope june
All very well, but wild flowers and plants are not ‘just’ food for insects, butterflies and creatures, as for many they are also their nursery, where eggs become catipillars then chrysalis before emerging into new butterflies.
That takes more than a month.
So great to see people care, but if you want more than giving just a month of unmolested food, then leave as many areas uncut until mid Autumn to give their young a chance to multiply.
Otherwise like giving a free school lunch, then decapitating the infant school population and expecting as many adults to be around in the future. THINK
When they cut the months worth of grass will it be picked up or left to smother the sward and look a mess?
Just left as a thick brown mulch with bagged and unbagged festering dogs excreta , dropped crisp and sweet packages, alcohol crushed tins, and fag packets intermingled within adding colour to the odious pile.
Good for flies though.
So now we have to put up with everything looking scruffy and unkempt in the name of conservation. Is the Council going to pick up the bill, when someone fails to give way and has a collision at a junction or roundabout, because they couldn’t see the approaching vehicle over the metre or more high weeds?
No way am I leaving my lawn uncut during any month, makes it far too hard work the following month and leaves the grass looking a mess for weeks.
Talk about a load of bo*****ks. The council has been mowing for years with no thought of the so called biodiversity. It’s just another way of saving money. I for one will carry out mowing my lawn at the back and out the front. I’d like to know where they will spend money saved. (As if they will ! )
