Emergency services are attending a road traffic collision involving a motorcycle and a car on Long Lane in Newport this afternoon (Thursday).
Several police units and an ambulance officer are at the scene, approximately 250 metres before the Downend roundabout near Robin Hill, where a dark grey Kawasaki motorbike and a blue Renault Megane have collided.
The motorcyclist is currently being assessed by paramedics for any significant injuries following the incident, with a large impact mark visible on the windscreen of the car involved.
Southern Vectis has tweeted to say it’s Route 8 service is delayed due to the incident.
UPDATE @ 12:02 – It is not thought that the motorcyclist has sustained any serious injuries during the incident, despite the large amount of damage caused to both vehicles.
Island Echo has been told by a nearby resident that the Renault was overtaking another vehicle on the semi-blind bend at the time of the impact.
Recovery for the vehicles is being arranged and the road remains closed between Downend and Buckbury Lane at this time.
UPDATE @ 13:24 – The road has now reopened following the incident and the recovery of both vehicles.

Best wishes to the motorcyclist who would seem to be the innocent party here, judging by the witness report and the fact that the car is on the wrong side of the road.
why was the car overtaking in the first plase
Hope the rider recovers..To be fair the road goes into 2 carriageways there so may be of been going into lane, cant see any reason to overtake there
I think you are thinking of a different part of the road. The accident looks like it is right outside a house , which is on a blind bend just past the robin hill roundabout , going into Newport down Long Lane.
Poor motorcyclist, hope he’s okay. One minute cruising the open road, the next faced with car coming head on.
What kind of moron overtakes through a set of blind corners. Absolutely unthinkable stupid behaviour and I hope a judge comes down as hard as he can on that driver.
Just another case of terrible IOW drivers. They are the worst drivers ever.
Idiot
Do we no if it’s an iow driver
Wot a thing to say .why even bother to comment Mr or Mrs perfect like to see your perfect driving
Unacceptable overtaking on any bend without clear access & visible views, what a complete idiot who did this !
What if you had your Children in the car, I am incensed that anyone who performed this highly dangerous manoeuvre should not be allowed to ever drive again ! Now wait 3 hours for approval !
Too many car drivers either cut blind corners, do not look or think.. and overtake on blind bends.. they do not think of a motorcycle , what if it was an e-scooter instead of motorcycle… ?
That should be classed as dangerous driving.. rider was lucky.. this time..! Ban the car driver..
might be a mainland driver, they aren’t very clever from my experience.
cars overtake cyclist on bends or drive on the wrong side of the road on the island all the time they don’t think about what’s coming the other way
Totally agree with that I have lost count of the number of times I am on a bend and whoosh someone overtaking cyclists on my side of the road !!!!!!.
Patience please …
Just wait until you can see clearly I don’t want to be headline news ……
Meanwhile hope the motor cyclist is OK.
Must have been an awful shock …..
Plus all the inconvenience caused to the motor cyclist insurance work etc .
..
yes i totally agree too, people buy the biggest car and drive in the middle of the road and cut corners
never overtake on a corner or a brow of a hill its not rocket science if you can see clearly don,t do it.
Hope the motorcyclist is OK
Thoughts with all involved…. I hope the motorcyclist makes a quick recovery
How awful that luck in life or death so often gives the outcome for motor cycle accidents. The other poor guy who died near Butterfly world sadly never had such a lucky escape.
