An incident involving a tractor and trailer, which has overturned, has led to the closure of the main road between Newport and Shalfleet this morning (Tuesday).
Island Echo understands a tyre has blown on the tractor, which has come to rest at a 45-degree angle in a ditch.
The trailer unit has overturned onto its side.
It was just before 09:45 that the road traffic incident occurred, prompting an emergency response from Police.
The A3054 – between Newport and Yarmouth – has been closed between the junctions of Pound Lane and Elm Lane in both directions.
Mud is reported to be across the carriageway.
Southern Vectis says its Route 7 buses are diverting via Middle Road and Elm Lane in both directions until further notice. Bus stops between The Waverly and Bartons Corner cannot be served at this time.
UPDATE @ 12:18 – The road has now reopened in both directions.

Have your seen the speed these tractors and trailers travel at to get to Arreton and back as quickly as possible. It is frightening!
There needs to be more traffic police and
Speed cameras.
It is the year 2025 and the island still don’t have
speed cameras installed!
They make loads of money and once speeding
numpties keep receiving fines and points on their
licences they are very effective to making our roads
a safe place.
I would love to see the island MPs and Council leader
etc all drive around the island in unmarked neutral vehicles
and see for themselves the speeding issues on the island.
Brading and Godshill High Streets are meant to be 20MPH
AND THE REST!
They drive like it’s a race.
Time the law came down on them.
HGV drivers can only drive certain hours
They drive all day.
How is this right.
Hubby said the same thing, tachographs for hgv’s so they cant drive over hrs yet tractor drivers can drive all day, all night. Lack of concentration & too fast!
agree fully they are still going past my house at 10.30 pm.
“Island Echo understands a tyre has blown” well you dont understand as thats not whats happened
so what did happen then.??.. (I presume, from your comment, that you were either involved, or actually witnessed it)
Well if you know exactly what happened, then maybe tell him rather than moan!
what did happen?
Amidst all the comments about speeding which are based on no evidence whatsoever I should just like to say that I hope the driver was uninjured.
Speeding is rife on the island, open your eyes.
I have never seen such a lawless place.
It’s 2025 time the Council invested in speed cameras
Here’s an idea which will cost nothing.
Make it company policy No use of hand throttle on public roads on these machines.
They be’s them racing bumpkins! Oo-ar!!
