Police have cordoned off an area of Ryde Town Centre following a serious assault which has left blood trailed along the pavement this evening (Monday).
John Street, off the High Street, has been locked down as officers investigate the serious incident.
A large number of Police units rushed from Newport to Ryde at just before 19:30 in response to a call for help, which Island Echo understands reported a ‘bottling’.
It’s thought the attack took place in Victoria Street before the victim staggered around the corner to John Street. Blood can be seen along the pavement between the 2 roads.
Paramedics are currently attending to a casualty who has sustained a head injury, which has been described as ‘nasty’. First aid had been given by the initial responders ahead of the arrival of the Isle of Wight Ambulance Service.
The arrest of a male has taken place in nearby Nelson Street, although it is unclear at this stage if the arrest is in connection with the assault. The detained individual is being taken to Newport Police Station.
UPDATE @ 20:35 – 1 person has been conveyed to St Mary’s Hospital by land ambulance with serious, but not life-threatening injuries.
A cordon remains in place as investigations continue.
Hampshire Constabulary have been approached for a statement, which is expected on Tuesday morning.

I was abused walking passed there early today going shopping
Ryde say no more
I think you must mean the whole of the Island, then – Sandown, Newport, isolated areas too where someone goes stir crazy ….
The courts need to come down heavy on such violent scum. Why should people be allowed to do such, which could kill someone and just get a few weeks or a fine. This is attempted murder and needs a fitting sentence to prevent others copying.
See how ‘cool’ twenty years would be for the rubbish.
As much as I agree they won’t even get a prison sentence, they will get a slap.on the wrist and the don’t do it again speech
Ryde has always been a little rough around the edges however the violence is getting ridiculous now.
Wait until there are over a thousand more homes, and three thousand more beings, some from inner cities living here.
These are the good times now. Watch and learn.
Those giving planning permission and those developers will NOT be living anywhere near the misery they happily create for others.
God help YOUR children’s future here.
Some of the ‘older generation’ have been living here since birth. House price on the island are high because the high levels of 2nd homes. Being one of the ‘older generation’, I was unable to raise a deposit for a mortgage until I was 34 yrs old, (my parents could never afford to buy a home), but today the younger generation want to purchase during theIr early 20’s, nothing to do with the ‘older generation’.
Bart is talking about population not race or colour, so please stop using the race card.
There has and always will be a percentage of nasty violent people anywhere in the UK, more people mean more crime and violence from all colours.
Crime is getting worse on the Island because the population is rising, nothing to do with colour..
Richard, there are around two thousand young families waiting for a home on the Island, instead of blaming the elderly, would it not be better to house the young families first before housing people from the mainland??..
All councils around the country should give priority to their young first, sort out their local housing first before others, what ever colour they are.
Our younger generation is already being forced off the Island. Do you honestly think the building of 1000 new homes on the outskirts of Ryde is for their benefit? No! Those houses will be used for the overspill from Birmingham, London, Manchester, Liverpool etc etc. So, you can fully expect more of this to come.
What has happened to this place, it’s really despairing. Hope the person recovers whatever happened.
Another unacceptable attack. If the attacker is caught he or she needs a serious spell in prison They have crossed the line and clearly have no self control , conscience or indeed intelligence.
I also agree with Bart that life on the Isle of Wight will get worse if planning permission for huge housing developments are given the go ahead .
Small developments are far more sensible and allow more chance of newcomers integrating in a civilised manner , problems are inevitable if lots of people are brought here with little chance of work.
Maybe County Councils en mass need to question the imposed Government housing targets before it’s too late.
It just ridiculous the amount of people who think they can get away with this kind of behaviour
But they do, and they know it.
The system allows it…
Its shocking but the police can only do so much then its down to cps and courts…
Tougher sentencing required as a deterant for others.
In prisons
Remove pool tables tvs and privaleages for those that do serious harm to others… Simple really
Nothing wrong with Ryde! You get violence and trouble anywhere and everywhere. Last week people on here was having something to say about Sandown! You sort of people just like a moan, nothing better to do than sit behind a screen making yourself heard clearly makes you feel better! For whatever sad reason!
Yeah, well said. Far easier to be the sort of person who has no opinion on the news item itself and just moan at people who do think this sort of incident is unacceptable.
Clearly you have a lot better to do than sit behind your screen making comments eh?
I live in Ryde…..it’s a dump. There’s no ifs or buts…..it is a dump. The place itself is ok, but it’s the drunks and drug users who make it look so unsightly. The Police need more powers to move this scum on. Before you ask…..I’m a Caulkhead born and bred, and I’ve got a full time job, so I do have better things to do. Island Echo gives us this platform to allow us to air our views, so I’ve chosen to do so today.
Ryde was a paradise, I moved off the Island, Glad I did.
Unless the assailant has a 2 meter long arm he has broken the social distancing rules. At least arrest him for that.
Funny… but social distancing is a ‘policy’ and not a law.
The mainstream media is
quilty of making people BELIEVE that its law… But its not…
Where are these low life scum appearing from all of a sudden? Never had this 2 years ago even
I think you have quite a short memory. A few year’s ago Preston Close, Harding Road, Slade Road and School Street were virtually ‘no go’ areas. There have always been problem areas in Ryde and I think we can all foresee where the next problems will arrive.
Ok. I have heard about Preston Road being a bit dodgy but my point was directed at stabbings, drug use and this, some stupid young idiot picking up a bottle and smashing it over someone’s head. These type of incidents are happening more frequently and becoming increasingly violent.
Before this mental idea of putting the low life social housing rubbish on every new built estates or developments, they used to keep all the rubbish together in one area. They could then drug deal, have loud rap music, mate with each other, kids swarm from unkempt garden to the next, and all were content.
Now they build lovely new houses for private buyers and have to have so many for this low life to ruin.
Any new homes should never be given to rubbish people. Their existing living places should be checked by two independant organisations and IF their home, or garden is a mess, damaged, if any neighbours report trouble from such trash, then they stay in old, rubbish areas. That way there is a ‘reason’ to look after your home and garden, pay your rent and debts, and keep civil, otherwise YOU stay just where YOU belong forever.
When I first came to the Island with my parents 40 years ago…… If you didn’t have accomodation or proof of some where to stay…. You were sent back to the mainland… No homeless or sleeping on the beach aloud…. The Island was a safe place to live….. It still is compared to the mainland
