Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary has issued nearly £500,000 in fines to drivers using their phones on the road in the past 2 years.
The force handed out 2,349 Fixed Penalty Notices to drivers between 2023 and 2024, new Freedom of Information data has revealed.
An investigation by personal injury claim experts Accident Claims Advice found that, from 1,204 notices sent to drivers in 2023, the figure dipped to 1,145 last year.
That means a massive £469,800 worth of fines were sent to those driving in Hampshire and Isle of Wight for mobile phone offences across the 2 years.
A further 96 confirmed cases have already been logged by the force this year.
A law against making mobile phone calls or sending messages while driving in Great Britain has been in place since 2003. However, 3 years ago, the law became stricter, meaning that any use of a handheld device would trigger an offence, resulting in a £200 fine and 6 penalty points on your licence.
That’s only the ones who have got caught!
Everytime I drive I look at the vehicle in front’s
rear view mirror and drivers mirror, and if you look
at their face nine times out of ten they are looking
at their phone.
We need Camera’s installing to catch more Numpty’s.
Sometimes you even see work vans driving along
and they are on their phones.

Well done to the police. They know that it is illegal but still chose to do it. Heavier fines needed and if caught, take away and destroy the phones.
