A pub in Lake that has failed to operate as a viable business since 2013 could be turned into 5 flats.
A planning application has been submitted to transform The Stag Inn from a pub to private accommodation.
The pub was once owned by murdered landlord and councillor Gerry White, who was killed in May 2019 by Jonathan Stasiuk, a chef who had worked at Mr White’s pubs.
In a statement attached to the planning application, agents said the company who took over the business after Mr White’s death went into liquidation and his family then ran the pub.
The agents also said the premises had failed to operate as a viable ongoing concern since 2013.
The Stag, on the corner of Sandown Road and Newport Road, is the subject of the application to the Isle of Wight Council, by the family. They said:
“Throughout its operation, the public house has been faced with issues relating to anti-social behaviour requiring police attendance on numerous occasions.
“It is most unlikely that a change in ownership or management procedures would have any appreciable impact on the occurrence of anti-social behaviour.”
The building has been extended several times and was a public house until it closed in March due to the COVID-19 pandemic lockdown.
On the first floor, there are also 5 bedrooms.
Proposals seek to convert the building into 5, self-contained, 1-bedroom flats — 3 on the ground floor and 2 on the first —with no new external building construction.
The condition of the building, however, is said to be ‘poor’, with water damage and a hole in the kitchen ceiling. A report listing the extensive extent of renovation required has been included for the application, and puts the costs of repairs and renovation at more than £300,000.
A fire was also reported last December in the roof of the property.
Lake Parish Council object to the proposals and recommend the application for refusal stating it does not meet the required need for car parking — offering 2 spaces for the 5 flats — and contrary to planning policies.
The town council also says in its object it is concerned the premises has already begun to be stripped.

This building is an eyesore – tear it down – they painted the roof to pretend it had a new roof installed – it didn’t work it still looks awful
Will be just filled with low life, who will have their rent and council tax paid, and still be as much trouble if not more than the drunks who used to frequent it.
Such buildings should be sold as owner occupier only, thus keeping out the trash.
Keep such in one area, as we used to do. Then they can deal drugs, play loud vile music, have clones swarm from smashed fence unkempt garden to garden, and can all mate with one anothers spouces and fight.
The police would know where to go, and normal people could avoid their foul mouths when in their own gardens.
As a real local person of Wight I should like to comment on this subject. I have been in The Stag on but a few occasions. Each time, before and after the late Mr. White was alive, I was greeted with a warm welcome, bonhomie if you will, great service, and friendly banter ensued with the regulars. A really valuable part of Lake. And there’s the rub… With due respect, and belated condolences, to Jerry White’s family, it is a valuable asset as land. The government makes it so difficult for pubs to work profitably that, I fear, they see no other option than get what they can from developers. Sad, but understandable.
Nice to be able to have a say in this forum, unlike other snooty ones whose organisers pump one for opinion or information in the street or at work, but disregard one’s opinions on their ‘news site’ or appear completely aloof when one wishes them, ‘Good day,’ in the street! Cocksure so-and-sos must be very insecure. Regards to all, Lady Dunne-Standing.
Wish the Star Inn at Wroxall would turn into a B&B, and get a proper make over, at the moment as you drive pass it, it resembles a derelict building. An eyesore every morning.
