Early morning and evening trains on Island Line have been cancelled for at least the next 2 days due to yet more staffing issues.
It has been announced that train services between Ryde and Shanklin will cease to operate this evening, with important commuter journeys also scrubbed for tomorrow morning (Friday). Trains will not run on Friday evening either.
The 18:48 from Shanklin has been cancelled for today alongside the 19:15, 20:19 and 22:42 services. The 19:49, 20:49 and 21:49 trains from Ryde to Shanklin have also been cancelled, as well as the 19:14 and 23:15 services from Ryde Pier Head to Ryde St Johns.
There will be no trains until gone 07:15 tomorrow morning with the 05:35 Ryde St Johns to Ryde Pier Head pulled, as well as the 05:45, 06:14, 06:45 and 07:14 services to Shanklin. The 06:15 and 06:48 trains from Shanklin to Ryde will also not run.
There will be further disruption on Friday evening with trains once again cancelled from 18:48.
South Western Railway say that the cancellations are due to signalling staff being taken ill. However, Island Echo is told that 2 signallers have walked out of the job in the past few weeks, leading to further staffing issues on top of the recent shortage of drivers.
It’s unclear how long the revised timetable will continue for with 1 source saying “you can’t train a signaller in a week”.
UPDATE @ 10:11 – It has been confirmed that the disruption is set to continue until Sunday.
Island Line will not be running any services from 19:00 until 07:00 on Thursday, Friday and Saturday, with services resuming as normal on Sunday morning.
A rail replacement bus service will be provided during these hours between Ryde Esplanade and Shanklin and a separate minibus shuttle will run between Ryde Pierhead and Ryde Esplanade.

‘signalling staff’? Excuse my ignorance, but what are ‘signalling staff’? Please reassure me that in the 21st century there’s not people sitting someplace manually changing the signals on a stretch of railway less than 9 miles long?

Every inch of railway in the country is controlled by signalling staff. The railway would be extremely dangerous without signallers.
