A member of staff at HMP Isle of Wight has died whilst behind the walls of Parkhurst prison, but the circumstances of the death are not being treated as suspicious.
Police were called to the prison off Clissfold Road at 02:43 this morning after the body fo a 29-year-old male was discovered.
Hampshire Constabulary have confirmed that the death is not being treated as suspicious.
The man’s next of kin have been informed and a file will be prepared for the coroner in due course.
A spokesperson for the Ministry of Justice has confirmed that the male was a member of staff at the prison. Island Echo understands the local man was a prison officer.
In a statement issued this afternoon, Phil Copple, director general of prisons, said:
“We are providing extra support to staff at HMP Isle of Wight following the death of a colleague.
“My thoughts are with their family and friends at this incredibly difficult time.”
