Black smoke issuing from a convenience store in Shanklin has led to a callout for firefighters this morning (Monday) – with a slush machine to blame.
3 appliances from Shanklin, Ventnor and Ryde are in attendance on Regent Street, where staff and shoppers have evacuated from the Premier convenience store.
It was at 09:00 that smoke started billowing out of the front doors.
Island Echo understands a member of the public intervened, working to extinguish the fire utilising 2 extinguishers acquired from Hurst next door, and from other location.
Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus have now entered the commercial premises and have removed a faulty slush machine, which has been identified as the cause of the fire.
A small cordon is in place, but Regent Street remains open to all pedestrian and vehicular traffic.

The staff were seen having to get a fire extinguisher from their Chicken shop and borrow one from Hurst next door. Not too reassuring!
I thought it was law such businesses should have fire extinguishers
instore, it is the Isle of Wight though and Health and Safety is non existent.
Thought it was a legal requirement to have an extinguisher?
does beg the question ?
It’s the Isle of Wight what do you expect!
Does Health and Safety exist on the island!
Speeding is rife.
Parking on Pavements is rife.
Driving with NO MOT is rife.
Loads of filthy eateries yet they are still allowed to trade
displaying NO hygiene scores on their premises.
SO BUSINESSES NOT HAVING FIRE EXTINGUISHERS DOESN’T
SURPRISE ME ON THE LAWLESS ISLAND.
Not only that, the article specifically mentions a member of the public using an ‘acquired’ extinguisher to try to put it out.
First Rule of a Business Premises fire…
EVACUATE ALL CUSTOMERS!!!!
Mind you, I’m guessing that the Staff, not only couldn’t find (didn’t have?) extinguishers, they wouldn’t know how to use one!!!
The shop was evacuated, I just took it apon myself to save the alcohol lol
