An Isle of Wight angler has spoken of his shock at discovering up to 60 smooth-hound shark carcasses, seemingly slaughtered for their meat, on the banks of the River Medina.
Keen fisherman Kevin Parker came across the shocking scene of heads and trails of the diminishing species near to The Folly in Whippingham last week, taking to a local Facebook group to express his anger and the needless situation.
Worryingly, it has been revealed that the meat could end up in our local Fish & Chip shops as huss, as without the head and tails the meat is hard to identify. The discovery has been reported to the Angling Trust, Shark Trust and the Environment Agency.
Chairman of the Shark Trust, Richard Peirce, has said:
“What makes for outrage is these large animals having their fins and heads hacked off.
“You look at the picture and it looks horrific but this is going on all the time and fish that are unwanted are just dumped.”
Mr Parker has commented on the situation, saying:
“They were scattered all over the place, some were still whole and were just pups. Something needs to be done”.
