UPDATED: A section of pavement on Arthur’s Hill in Shanklin has been cordoned off by Police following an incident involving a cyclist earlier this afternoon (Friday).
Paramedics from the Isle of Wight Ambulance Service were called to the scene shortly before 14:15 when a cyclist – believed to be male – ‘fell’ near the junction of Clarence Road and St Boniface Cliff Road.
A cordon has been erected around 2 pools of blood as officers investigate the circumstances behind the incident.
The road remains open in both directions.
The extent of the casualty’s injuries is unknown at this stage, but it initial indications suggest he was not wearing a cycle helmet.
UPDATE @ 19:10 – The mainland-based Collision Investigation Unit has now arrived at the scene in Shanklin.
The specialist team investigate life-threatening, life-changing and fatal incidents on roads across Hampshire and the Isle of Wight.
Hampshire Constabulary are yet to issue a statement.
UPDATE SATURDAY – Hampshire Constabulary have this morning confirmed that a 57-year-old man is in hospital with life-threatening head injuries.
The unnamed man has been airlifted to Southampton General Hospital, where he is receiving treatment.
Officers are now trying to establish exactly what happened to cause the cyclist to come off his bike and would like to hear from anyone who may have seen the cyclist prior to the incident or anyone who witnessed it.
The cyclist was riding a dark coloured bike.
