Shanklin have been crowned Hampshire Division 1 champions after a dramatic double header against Millbrook on Sunday secured the league title.
Knowing that 2 victories would guarantee the championship, Shanklin welcomed Milbrook to the Isle of Wight with everything still to play for.
The home side started the opening match brightly and quickly took control of proceedings. Within the first 5 minutes, Kira’s relentless pressing forced an error from the Milbrook goalkeeper, allowing Gemma an early opportunity, but the chance could not quite be converted.
Shanklin continued to dominate possession and create chances throughout the game, only to be repeatedly denied by an inspired Millbrook goalkeeper. As the clock ticked down, it appeared the deadlock might remain unbroken – a result that would leave Shanklin relying on results elsewhere.
Then came the breakthrough.
With just 4 minutes remaining, Gemma picked up possession and produced a perfectly weighted through ball over the Millbrook defence for Charlotte to run onto. Keeping her composure, Charlotte calmly slotted the ball past the goalkeeper to spark huge celebrations.
It was Charlotte’s first goal of the season for Shanklin – and a crucial one at that – as the hosts secured a vital 1-0 victory.
Half the job was done.
The second game followed a similar pattern, with Shanklin once again dominating large spells and creating several chances without finding the breakthrough.
Millbrook then struck against the run of play to take a 1-0 lead, setting nerves jangling around the ground as Shanklin searched for an equaliser.
The home side continued to push throughout the second half and, with 20 minutes remaining, news filtered through that Porchester – Shanklin’s joint league leaders – had lost their match.
The result meant Shanklin had officially secured the Hampshire Division 1 title regardless of the outcome against Millbrook.
Scenes of celebration erupted among players, management and supporters as the reality of their achievement sank in. Although the second game ended in a 1-0 defeat, it mattered little as Shanklin were crowned Hampshire Division 1 League Champions.
It has been a remarkable season for everyone connected with the club, with the players’ hard work, commitment and dedication throughout the campaign fully rewarded.
