A convicted sex offender who forgot to notify Police of his new bank card could be heading to prison after breaching his suspended prison sentence.
Luke Targett, 60, of Bonchurch Shute in Ventnor pleaded guilty to failing to comply with the notification requirements when he appeared at the Isle of Wight Magistrates Court on Tuesday (1st August).
Targett was handed an 8-month prison sentence, suspended for 2 years, back on 20th May 2022 for possession of extreme pornographic images and making an indecent image of a child. Targett was also ordered to sign onto the sex offenders register and to notify Police of several things such as bank card, address, passport and social media account changes.
At Tuesday’s hearing, the court heard how on 8th July 2023, Targett attempted to register a bank card at Newport Police Station that was issued to him back in May 2023, over 5 weeks late. This is in violation of the requirements of his notice on the sex offenders register.
Defending Targett, Barry Arnett told the court that the 60-year-old went to the Police station to register of his own accord and that it was him who noticed it was wrong.
After admitting this offence, Targett is in breach of his suspended sentence order and as a result, could be sent to prison for a total of 8 months. This will be decided when Targett next appears at the Isle of Wight Crown Court on 30th August. He has been granted unconditional bail until that date.
